Wow, it's truly a shame that someone is a potential victim because of the flag they show in their profile.

What I find somewhat amusing is that when I am in touch with a "fellow countryman (or woman)" I tend to use humour differently as they will understand what I am saying. If I am communicating with a person from another country, I tend to keep my comments more generic in order to avoid causing confusion.

Personally, I like having the little flag as part of my profile as I tend to think of myself in that way. I enjoy the international aspect of communicating here or elsewhere on the internet and the idea of messaging with someone outside my "home" country is always a pleasant experience.

Sometimes tolerance is missing in today's fast paced world. I like tolerance... I don't get choked when someone has a different opinion from me. What I get annoyed by is rudeness and disrespect. I actually got a negative rating one time because I suggested someone didn't need to make their comment in such a sarcastic way... Can you imagine? I did not hunt them down and retaliate by the way, I just thought about tolerance...

I don't think ANY country has the market cornered on poor behaviour - it is individuals  whose behaviour could be brought into question based on what they do, and not the country they come from.

If we can't get along in a forum, then the prospects for the world are not promising...

I will now step off my soapbox...

his thing of correcting people can be a very sensitive thing and i, personally, would only dream of correcting an individual if i know them quite well or have communicated with them for a while, i generally don't care where a person is from tho'. that cos' my humour is childish enough that it don't matter
That's the thing about racism, though, most of it is covert.

I agree with James - correcting small errors will be seen as nit-picking from my experience and considered rude.  Just think how someone would be viewed if they corrected every one of Skip's typos?

Well, yes, but I have no trouble in understanding you and I would be offended to be honest, if you were to treat me like a "special case", just because I happen to live in Norway. I've been temped to remove my flag, though I haven't yet, because I'm too proud to do it - and I'm proud of being Norwegian. I just don't want to be treated differently.

I would argue that some simply want to view themselsves as a victim and use their nationality as an excuse, as opposed to looking at  their own actions for an explanation.

Just be clear Yvonne, you might not get some of the local humour which could be interpreted as insulting.

Insofar as wanting to be treated the same as others, I completely agree. My wife is from Denmark, and I sure as heck know better than to treat her differently - but I do love it when she calls me names in Danish...

Well, if I don't understand, I just ask. And that's the whole point.(..) And I probably understand more than you might think. I would rather tell, than being told.

Absolutely, now you really do sound like my wife - she always prefers telling rather than being told, I learned that 35 years ago... I learned to say yes dear, you are right!
