You can also try the recommendations in this blog (Jesper knows what he talking about). You sure you don't have and AMD based system?

It's been telling me its a Pentium 4 2.0GHz for 6 years...
But if I can't trust Microsoft, can I trust Intel?

Anyway, I'll just start installing all the necessary software. I remembered how to take over directories from "defunct" users, so I have access to most installation files (I purchase most over the internet). The only thing I don't readily get access to are old emails (which may have the product keys for those same programs).

Staid,

So you did manage to get access to your files? I password protected my documents folder once, had a similar problem with not being able to access my files even with the same user name and password (MS must be using some additional hash which makes sense). I was able to recover access to my files in the long run. What are you using for email? if your using outlook you can probably get to the file that stores you email and use that to restore it to your outlook account on your new user.

default location is:
C:\Documents and Settings\[UserName]\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook
or
C:\Documents and Settings\[UserName]\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

i forget which one, but i think its the first one (on my system that has a nice large .ost file, though I thought I remembered it being .pst file. But you should be able to use that to either restore (or copy it over the existing, I would backup (export) any new mail first though)

If you archive you mail, that will also be there (or similar as well). And now that I think about it, I believe from outlook you could use File->Open->Outlook Data File (there is also an option, other user's folder which may work for you) to just open that file and access your mail that way. You should then be able to export it and import it into your local (or just access it from the open data file, but not sure if that auto-reopens when you start up).

Of course if you don't use outlook none of this helps, but hopefully someone finds it useful so I didn't waste my time

I had been using Outlook Express, and was recently "invited" by Microsoft to move to Live Mail. I know where the files are, I am not sure yet how to open them. Not my first priority now.

As for the protected files, you need to start in Safe Mode as an Administrator, right-click on the relevant folder, go to the "Security tab", click the "Advanced" button, go to the "Owner" tab, and take it from there...

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I always move the PST to a folder on a different drive; so if there's trouble on C: I am in no danger to loose those mails...

Since settings don't allow this, close Outlook and move the file. When you reopen Outlook it will complain that the file isn't there. Point to the file in its new location and close Outlook. When you reopen Outlook again things should be back to normal.

OST files are temporary storages for the mail if you use an Exchange server. If things go wrong this data is poetentially lost; but the originals should still be on the Exchange server after all...

outlook express files should be on your original installed windows xp:
c:\Documents and Settings\YOUR USER NAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{ large HEX number}
local settings and applications are hidden folders.

That would explain why i remember it as a .pst and when I checked it here at work, where we have an exchange server, I saw the .ost

thanks for the info

Confirmed; same here on my laptop operating XP Home! No problems at all. My new desktop pc has now MS Vista and works perfect as well. I love the Profiler - no problems on any machine or operating system:
tested on:

XP Home/Pro SP1
XP Home/Pro SP2
XP Home/Pro SP3
Vista
and on very different machines, from Celeron V330 to Quad Core Pentium. everything is fine!

I got an "Access is denied" error when I tried to install it.  Apparently this is a common problem, and I think I have gotten the way to fix it and let me install SP3.  When I get a free hour or so I'll try again -- but I'm gonna download the program first so I won't have to download it again if it doesn't work.  When I tried it the first time, I didn't get an option to save the installer program -- so when the install failed I lost the program -- and will have to download it again.   Even with high speed cable broadband it took about 20-30 minutes just to download the file.  Another 20-30 to do the install, only to get the error.  Then another 20-30 minutes to restore (uninstall) SP2 -- and with a warning that the restored SP2 might not work right.

Doncha love Microsoft & Bill Gates?

PS:  My processor is a Celeron not an AMD.

Hi there!
I can understand your frustration. But well - I think we cannot blame Mr. Gates for evereything. Your "access denied" message may be a result of your firewall settings? When I downloaded the servicepack 3 it took me about 5 minutes with a broadband connection (we call it dsl 16000).

The installation on my weakest machine (Celereon V330, 196 MB Ram) was about 1 hour. Installation time on my laptop PIV 1 Gig Ram was about 20-25 minutes.

So far I agree that we have so many different results when installing sp3 - beginning from "no problems" and ending at "I had to reinstall my system"

You could be right about the firewall, Kahless, but I don't know.

The method I think I'm going to try is one I found at the Windows website:

Quote:
I met same problem with you yesterday. Now, I installed SP3 v3311 via WU. Pls see my step as below:

1. Uninstalled SP3 v3300.

2. Run Windows XP SP3 Release Candidate 2.exe. (down load from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=114F3599-12AF-42B2-AAB1-B969A62C68A7&displaylang=en)

3. Checked if you installed subinacl.exe. If not download and install subinacl.exe.

4. Create a file called reset.cmd with Notepad. Copy the text below into the file reset.cmd and run reset.cmd with administrative rights (it may take a LONG time):
cd /d "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Resource Kits\Tools"
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
subinacl /subdirectories %windir%*.* /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\inf\defltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb /verbose

5. Run windows update.

This thread had an earlier message in it that the same error cropped up when people upgraded to SP2:

Quote:
Re: XP SP3 RC2 -- Access is Denied error
Although http://support.microsoft.com/kb/873148 describes the very same error while installing SP2 for Windows XP, it "may" be useful while getting the error message installing SP3 too.

If this method works, I'll let you know.

I got the access denied as well and it was related to permissions on some registry keys.  That registry key cleanup routine they suggest you run took care of the problem for me and the SP installed cleanly.  FYI, that cleanup routine took a decent chunk of time to run because it's going to reset the permissions on darn near every single registly key you have.
