| Posted: | | | | @ Eric V: I really don't buy into the Samsung exec story. I for one am not interested in HD downloads, it still is highly compressed, so not as good as Blu-Ray. And paying for downloads seems to me I'm paying for air. I want physical media. I don't want to build a Datacenter in my home to collect movies @ Pantheon: I don't think it's a waste of money. Collecting is part of the fun. I noticed you are approaching 5000 dvd's. Do you have some secret how to watch all or most of your movies multiple times. I have about 12 hours a week available to watch movies or tv series. With the strong €, it is really interesting for me to buy online at the moment. So I'm purchasing quicker than I can watch. The $ is getting stronger again so this is going to end in the near future I guess. Hopefully I can start to catch up. | | | View my collection at http://www.chriskepolis.be/home/dvd.htm

I sincerely hope you don't buy many movies then, as it would be a colossal waste of money!! 5648 DVDs/BD/HDDVD and counting. They're all blind buys, since I don't rent or go to the theater. I'm in the retail business, so if I were to sell, I'd be able to get back my purchase price in many cases, and if not I would not lose more than the price for renting. Of course, I've never sold anything since I can't seem to part with anything, even the crappy ones. I'm buying while I can, cause who knows what the future brings? And I plan to live at least 50 more years. But back to the topic; I can see why some people don't see the value of upgrading. For me (and everybody else who has a projector screen) it's a little different. I think the difference is so big, I can't justify buying the DVD version instead. I've no problems buying DVDs and watch an 80's DTV horror flick with bad PQ though. HDTV is the future. All over the world, HD channels are popping up. And people will be getting bigger and bigger screens (Remember when buying a 32" CRT screen, and was amazed at the size?) and with HDTV being the norm, more and more people would prefer not getting inferior quality on their physical media. And of course, prices will go down. And Blu-ray players all play DVDs, and with lower prices right around the corner, many will buy a cheap BD player to replace their old DVD player, even if they may not use it much for Blu-ray.

How can online not be cheaper? Actually, that will soon be coming to a screeching halt. Here in California (USA), for example, we are required to report any online purchases throughout the year when filing our state income taxes and pay the sales tax on those purchases at that time. Does everyone report their online purchases? Doubtful. But it is the law of the land in this money grubbing state. | | | My WebGenDVD online Collection |

I want a DVD too. But who knows maybe it will be a better DVD format, or that holographic storage IBM has been working on for quite some time.... | | | Thank You, Eric Vogel |

I dunno if it is the law or not, but people actually do report it and the state if I remember at least gets a million extra in taxs. | | | Thank You, Eric Vogel |

But it is the law of the land in this money grubbing state. in the Uk (and Europe) they have a lower limit for which they are not interested - in the UK the limit is £18. If the item is less than £18 then the taxman doesn't expect any VAT. (Which is why so many dvds online are priced at £17.99) | | | Paul |

The legislature in AZ tried to pass the same law and it was struck down so thoroughly that we thought they might even be ousted. I guess CA dems will always find a loop hole to screw the constituents. |

| Posted: | | | | While I very much so like the BD format, I cannot see trying to replace the nearly 1000 DVD's I currently own. Where I work I have great access to BD and all that comes with it at a lower price and I am just not interested in the expense of the upgrade. I own a beautiful television, so all I would need is the player and the bd discs. I have seen many films in BD and I am just not impressed enough. Maybe, they will make me change my mind maybe not. Then again George will put out Star Wars in BD or some other HD at some point at which point I will have to jump into the fray. |

| Posted: | | | | I purchased the Playstation 3 and thought that the support for Blu-ray was a nice bonus at the time. Now that the format war coming to an end (?) is when I finally can buy BD without wondering about choosing the wrong format or not. But no way that I´m starting from scratch regarding replacing all the DVD's in my collection. Of course there´s been one or more double dips but don´t tell my gilfriend. |

I do it with some titles, but not much. Only a select few.

Max,
I am very sorry to here that. The legislature in AZ tried to pass the same law and it was struck down so thoroughly that we thought they might even be ousted. I guess CA dems will always find a loop hole to screw the constituents. Tell me about it. As soon as I can afford it, I'm moving out of this sh$#hole state. I wouldn't mind the high taxes and even paying the sales tax on internet purchases if our tax dollars went towards something worthy but that's not the case. Here our legislators are more concerned with providing free medical care to illegal immigrants, driver's licenses to uninsured illegal immigrants, welfare, gay marriage and gun control. All the while this state's infrastructure is falling apart, businesses and jobs are fleeing the state, gang violence is rampant, our education system is in the toilet...OH, but the Lottery was supposed to take care of that! What a joke. Our legislature has been fighting over the state budget for months, which was supposed to have been passed two months ago. You know what Arnold “The Terminator” Schwarzenegger’s solution to get the budget passed was? He cut State workers pay to the national minimum wage of $6.55 per hour until the budget is passed. Hundreds of families now are on the brink of losing their homes because they are unable to make their mortgage payments. My step brother’s family is among them. Nice job Governator! Please excuse my off-topic rant…I just had to get it off my chest. On-topic, I won’t be going Blu-Ray anytime soon . | | | My WebGenDVD online Collection |

| Posted: | | | | I just took the plunge with my first five Blu-rays yesterday. $126. I'm tying not to be a remorseful buyer, but I think I'm going to have to slim my pickin's by about 40%. For example, I don't need Run Lola Run on Blu-ray, but David Gilmour: Remember That Night, absolutely!!! |
