The only thing I'd tag as "insane" is buying the exact same disc/content just for different packaging.

so by buying the same exact Beetlejuice movie just one has cardboard case and other the normal plastic keep case, that's insane? you're probably right! i just hate those cardboard cases, don't have the heart to get rid of any movies!!

I can relate though, I don't like getting rid of movies either. I ended up rebuying a movie I had sold because I felt bad not having it anymore. I then ended up buying it again in one of those double feature sets.

Mostly when I get rid of movies its because I bought a newer better version (replacement killers, highlander) and then I generally give the old version to family or friend.

I also bought the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles box set partly to get rid of the snapper case my single copy of turtles came in.

I also have the ultimate and extreme editions of T2
The first release of Star Wars as well as the later release, but since that came with the Originals it's ok. I did almost buy the repackage of the first set for the different artwork though.

few others I doubled on are:
office space - upgraded to blu because mine was non anamorphic
spaceballs - also non anamorphic upgrade to blu
twister - upgrade to blu
superman - upgraded to the ultimate set
and a few dbz movies that were in box sets that I already had one of but the price was too good to pass up.

and then a couple movies I ended up with duplicates, which I'm planning on selling, when my fiance and I merged our collections

With me, it's Sam Peckinpah's Straw Dogs.  I think I have 3 on DVD and one (maybe 2) on VHS, plus I think I taped it once off cable.

Just heard today they are re-doing Straw Dogs for 2010 ..

I heard that awhile ago, too.  I doubt it would be an improvement over the original.

There's some sites on the web where you can download scans or custom covers to replace snappers and horrid artwork. Most work on a credit system, so you'll either have to share some scans, make some customs or cough up some cash to get them.
r1db.com is one I've used and love, because everything is in Hi-Res (it's required and what seperates it from cdcovers.cc, where you can probably find a lower-res version for free, just have you anti-spyware and anti-virus on when going there) and there's no spyware/popups/nasty net stuff going on. Almost any snapper case in existence has been reformated to a keepcase cover, which you can dl, print, cut and use.

Also some amazing artists on there who make customs you would swear were the real deal. I've done a couple customs, but can't compete on the level of those guys. Mine look semi-pro, thier's look all-star pro!

Since you brought it up, daddy. those Custo Cover art sites are all illegal. Hollywood shuts them down all the time. Here is why they are illegal. Their users are producing custom artwork which they do not own, the Studios own the artwork, these sites are then "selling" this artwork which neither the producer of the art nor the site have ownership, this is a very clear violation of copyright. I know of one site, in particular, that is being investigated right now by a Major Hollywood Srtudio and i expect that once they are satisfied with their investigation the site will receive a cease and desist order, and they will shut down rather than dealing with a lawsuit they can't win.

I have seen some of this art, and a lot of it IS very nice  and very professional...but it is also very illegal.

I can seee both sides of this. It just erks me to no end that dvd studios pay people to make absolute horrible looking covers that have nothing to do with the film, while there's great artwork they just ignore. Then they go after someone who wants their dvds to look somewhat like the VHS boxes they grew up loving. There's a word for that, but it would probably come up all stars if I said it here.

Ironically hardly any is getting "sold", but I guess trading counts as selling in the eyes of the bloodsucking lawyers. I never gave them a dime, just a handful of obscure scans a couple customs I made, and now have more credits than I know what to do with.
The just plain scans are great for replacments like if the original gets water on it or torn somehow (I'm looking at you security stickers).

I just hope Hollywood doesn't go to the next level and has places like moviegoods take down any poster scans that can be used for custom covers.

I hear ya, pal and i don't necessarily agree with them, but it's the way it is. I think the problem with a lot of these sites and their Cover users is they simply don't know when to quit. Covers might be one thing, but when you also are producing disc art and Covers for Major movies which have not yet been released to DVD or BD, then they are going too far.

I think the studios aren't so much worried about you and I using these images to replace damaged covers on DVDs we have bought and paid for than they are worried that bootleggers are using the images for their counterfeit discs.  All it would take would be a good color printer, a supply of empty keep cases, and a shring wrap machine -- and from the outside, it would be hard to tell the boot from a legitimate DVD.

Why would a bootlegger want to use custom art (thus advertising to anyone in the know that it's a bootleg) when it would be so easy to copy the original art and use that instead?

Perfectly sane!

My "record" is:
Amadeus US R1
Amadeus US 2 disc DC R1
Amadeus Norw 2 disc DC R2
Amadeus UK BluRay

btw. DVDP Mobile has reduced amount of unforeseen duplicates
Today I almost bought a double feature already present in an quadruple feature...

I will buy more than one copy if the it has been remastered and reviewed by many to be better,
say with additional or a better director's cut.
Also a number of dupes via Critierion's new Blu-rays.
Also few dupes from collections, as via Deep Discount sale one resulted in two dupes, but was
cheaper than buying the ones I did not have separately.
I need to go though my 1200 laser discs and see what else needs to be replaced.
I too have bought many copies of the Disneys and classics like GWTW and Oz.
We don't need stinkin' IMDB's errors, we make our own.

A bootlegger probably wouldn't want the custom art, but many of the sites I've seen in the past offer the original art as well which a bootlegger would be able to use.
