I saw it yesterday - in 3D! One of the best movies in the last years. The 3D technology is getting better and better. The landscape was amasing. I can recomend that movie in 3D to everybody. Male and female.

Just saw this fantastic and wonderous film in 3D, wow!  Cameron has created a visually stunning and rich world of color, light and beauty, like nothing I've ever seen before. Apparently partially inspired by the animation and ideas of Hayao Miyazaki, there are floating mountains, uncomparable and beautiful alien forests of flora and fauna, amazing creatures and lots of flying.  I'm sure the BD will be impressive, but imo, the immersive 3D version of this movie is a MUST SEE on a giant theater screen! Even if you rarely go to the movies, this is one of those rare times that you really need to experience it in a theater.

You summed it up very nicely so I had to quote you.  The BD will be awesome. I'm sure it looks good in 2D. I saw it in 3D and it was stunning and as you say immersive. The 3 hours doesn't seem long. I didn't want it to end.

I packed the crew up in the 4WD and braved our 19" of snow Sunday and drove 30 miles to the closest IMAX True 3D theater.  I don't want to overhype it but yes, it was worth the trip.  Go see it, and go see it in the best 3D theater you have around.  This is the first 3D film I've ever seen that the 3D was not used as a gimmick.  They've created a believable ecosystem and populated it to the gills.  Impressive stuff.

I saw it in 3D and didn't realize it was in IMAX. We can't wait to see it again and I will endeavor to find it in IMAX. The bigger the better. And I agree that the 3D was not a gimmick. It draws you in. The 3D movies over the last year have really perfected, in my opinion, using 3D to create the environment rather than trying to shock you with tricks. The best example I can think of from last year is Coraline.

I agree. My wife loved it. Said it's her favorite film ever.

To me, this movie takes elements of all of the big game-changer movies over the years (The Wizard of Oz, Gone with the Wind, Ben-Hur, Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Titanic, Lord of the Rings....and everything Pixar), crams it into a kaleidoscope and then detonates it onto the screen. It's like nothing else I've ever seen.

Thank you. That's what I wanted to say.. This is so much more than a movie. It's an experience like no other.. (BTW: I am not a Virgin!)... Still, seeing this movie is like a great dream.. After you're finished you can't believe what you saw.. Really awesome..
Really, I personally think that Cameron is an arrogant snob but this movie is just so great

It's funny, the first couple of posts in this thread were very negative, but now that people actually saw the movie the tone has changed dramatically.

It was the same for me with Cameron's worst film: Titanic. I resisted seeing the schmaltzy epic for several weeks, but when friends dragged me in there I liked it way more than I expected.

I do (Unfortunately?) have higher expectations for Avatar though.

??? I don't read those as negative at all. Mine certainly wasn't intended that way.
I guess it's all in the eye of the beholder...

After 3 weeks., thought I'd bring this subject up to the front of the line again.. Last I read was Avatar had now crossed over the $$1.25B mark another 400M will  break Titanic ..
So.. who went?  was the 3D worth the extra $3 over flatscreen?,,
If the Industy brings out 3D TV next year will Avatar be a must own Blueray 3d purchase??
Will Kevin Costner sue??
what are your thoughts., ??

I'm not going to see it unless someone buys it for me. I love many of Cameron's older films but I prefer my movies to be mostly real, not 30% live action and 70% CGI. It's just my personal preference.

I saw it in 2D at the local Cineworld before Christmas and thought it was spectacular. There's not an IMAX near me, but I decided it was worth the journey, so went to see it at the IMAX a couple of weeks ago.

Visually incredible at the IMAX and worth the extra few pounds admission charge, the depth of the view was staggering, with no loss of colour or definition.

Regardless of what people think about the story, the technical achievement is staggering.

Is that for both of you or each?

It was £8.95 each for the IMAX 3D in Glasgow when I went.

Not if they're sold out...I had the same problem last weekend.  They were sold out through Sunday night.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
