A beautiful cat. Sorry for your loss, Battling Butler! I lost my senior at the age of 15 years on the 1st of Jan this year. This was his favourite place:

...still miss him...

That is the reason I haven't got a kitten so far, the loss would be so hard to take.

I got a question for you all, if you have lost a furry companion, do you get a new one or is this not an appropiate thing to do ?

Yes. However, after my last cat passed away, I didn't get a new kitten for almost six months...and it was quite lonely during that time without a cat in the house.

This was my last cat (Aspen)...as a kitten:

...and not long before he died at age 11½:

...and this is the cat (Silver) I have currently...as a kitten:

...and all grown up:

thx for sharing those cute pics

Yeh I can imagine that its very strange if you always had a kitten when all of a sudden none is around, so i think it was a good choice to get a new companion

What is the average life cycle of a cat ?
15 years ?

@ Battling, Sorry for your loss! As you may or may not remember, I have been through this too. Your Spooky was beautiful!!!

@ Donnie, yes! as Corey says it gets lonely without the furry companions. You will never, however, replace the one you lost as they each have their own purrsonality!

I too still miss Shakira, Merry-Li, Zuleika, Hagley, Gimli, Muffin and all the others that have been in my life at one time or another! I have Mithrandir, Laverne and Shirley at present and they are a joy but will never replace the missed furry companions but do fill that void somewhat!

I had cats the half of my life and hopefully will always have. The death is part of the life - for humans and pets as well! Today I have 2 cats, 3 and 4 years old (see avatar) and a dog. Anyway: I will never forget any of my previous cats. They have been all different in character and (as Caroline said) purrsonality!

It really depends. I would say between 12- 18 years in average. But milage may vary! Some cats arrive only 8years and some over 20 years. But it is not important how old they get, important is the quality of life!

Both of my cats (got last valentines day ~6 and 8 yo) were street cats before. The other one has lost one eye before and when i got it "completely healthy", in reality the other one has a chronic ear infection. According to the vet it would take months to developed to the stage it was at, my father (human doctor) said she could have had it for years. So i'm a bit afraid she might have a short life. But on the other side, its been great to see her getting better by the week. At the moment with doctors recommendations i'm not feeding any cat food to them anymore. Just meat and fish (with Orion's multicat vitamins).

Aaaanyway, if my budget can hold all the vet bills the special diet and all that for i year, ive been thinking of getting a third one Preferably a kitten, unless i get to a similar situation where someone needs a new home asap.

The time ive got the two cats, my home has changed a lot. I might actually make a topic about my cat furniture stuff i've been assembling lately... As it would be intresting to see others stuff too.

Probably something like that, although my grandma had four cats when I was growing up, each one lived to be 20+, with the oldest passing on at 24 and the youngest at 21. I don't know what her magic touch was. Maybe cause she lived in the country and they got lots of outdoors exercise.

I think you might be on to something. There is a feral cat program in Buffalo that I'm involved in. I trap them and get them spayed or neutered, all their shots, flea treatment, and if needed treated for worms or ear mites. They get all of this done and it only costs $10!

So far I have done 17 cats. What amazed me is how healthy they are. Only 1 had ear mites and another (the oldest meanest one!) had a couple of teeth missing. Other than that all of them were in extremely good health. One other thing is they were all on thin side - all of them weighed between 6 and 10 pounds.

One of the feral cats, Molly, decided to live with me. I think someone must have dumped her because she is unlike any of the other feral cats I know. She used to run after my car and once I got out she would leap into my arms.

I'm ashamed to say she has gotten fat since I've had her. She went from 8 pounds to 19. I'm hoping once she gets a little more secure she will start to loose weight.

Feral cats do not like to be with people and want to be free, not Molly. It is so funny, I put her in the foyer several times to let her leave if she wanted and she would not go. Now, every time I open the door, she turns her head. She doesn't even want to look outside! She's had enough of that.

Spooky was beautiful.

I miss my cats and dogs that have died.  It is so hard when that happens, but I can't imagine not having pets.  My mom had a cat when I was little and we got our first dog when I was about 7.  Since then, I've always had cats and dogs.

Most of my cats have put on weight after I got them.  Lillie the most I think.  She loves cat treats.  For a while, I was bad and gave her tons of them.  Now I have cut back and they get a few once a day.  Though Lillie will try to steal the other's treats if she gets the chance.

Hmm, I rescued my kitty (well, he's 3) in January...so far, I don't think he's gotten any bigger.  He started out at 12 lbs, and about 1 1/2 months later, he was still that weight.  Thought he was getting chubbier, but I bought a new brush (the Furminator and it works great!) and once I was done, he was a lot skinnier; the chubbiness was all fur.  He's pretty active and that helps keep him at a steady weight, I think.

I have the opposite problem with treats with him, though.  I can't find any that he loves!  I thought I had it with the Pounce moist ones, but after about 3/4 of a bottle, he won't eat them anymore.  I've tried crunchy and different flavors.  Mainly, he'll eat them if I put it in his food dish, but he doesn't really like anything "special."  I even tried dried anchovies!  He wouldn't even touch those! Any suggestions? He doesn't like tuna either (unless it's covered in Mayo). I want him to have at least one special treat he likes.

I guess I just have an odd cat.  No wonder he fits in well with my family!  Though, he does loves his Purina cat chow!

It can really range, and the breed of the cat can also be a factor. My best friend's father is a local veterinarian; and he has six cats as pets...and four of them are currently between the ages of 18 and 22 years old. They've had more cats in the past that lived to equally old ages before passing away of natural causes. He feeds them cheaper cat food (unlike the top-brands he sells in his office), so I don't know where they get their long lives from.

Pet pics... heart-warming. I tried to resist but couldn't, so here's my she-cat:

I'll send more as soon as she's dead.
