And like anything invented after someone is a child, it meets reactionary resistance. I beg to differ with this broad, and slightly insulting, generalization as I enjoy many, MANY things that have been invented after I was a child. In fact, now that I think about it, I would have to say that I enjoy most of the things that were invented after I was a child. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. I beg to differ with this broad, and slightly insulting, generalization as I enjoy many, MANY things that have been invented after I was a child. In fact, now that I think about it, I would have to say that I enjoy most of the things that were invented after I was a child. I agree. But there is a loud minority of adults who disagree with us. Not on every thing... One reactionary will respond to electric cars, another to widescreen TVs, another to digital media, another to Twitter, another to Facebook. And they make it seem as if anyone who enjoys these technological changes is foolish. I recently listened to an interview with a film director. The interview touched on the significance of 3D in cinema. The director said it was a tool, and like all innovations in movie making, it would be misused, and like all great movie making innovations, it would set back other artistic achievements for a while. To illustrate that point, he said that just before sound came to film, cinema was at an artistic height... using color, camera techniques, the quality of acting, the integrity of the scripts, etc. But when sound arrived, few actors could be as good while delivering lines. It took a while for a new breed of actors to emerge. And because of the large microphones and the noise cameras made, the filming became static, eliminating many camera moves, and forcing actors to look in only one direction as they spoke. It took about a decade before the beauty of the image and the acting skills caught up with the innovation. And right now, filmmaking is going through that with 3D. Each of us accept (and often embrace) technological innovations. But a (vocal) few of us will find some innovations unpleasant, and in their unwillingness to embrace this one new thing, will make broad unfair statements about anyone who enjoys the change. I am not a fan of 3D. If it becomes as ubiquitous as color, sound, widescreen, and digital... maybe the art will return to film. But I try not to insult those who embrace 3D. If you feel I insulted you with my broad statement about someone's loud objection to technological advances, I did not make my point of view clear. Not everyone objects to all such advances. But we've seen a number of those who object to Twtter on the first page of this thread. I rarely use Twitter. I tweet only in response to my 42-year-old son's tweets. He prefers Twitter to Facebook. I prefer Facebook to Twitter. So I do both. One daughter I have is all over Facebook (as is my mom), another daughter prefers to run her own blog. To keep up to date with all of them, I look at all every day. I use Facebook several times each day. I prefer physical visits, but distance and busy schedules prevent that from happening as often as I like. | | | If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

| Posted: | | | | So obviously your response was just as harsh and judgemental as my thoughts on Twitter and the people who agreed with me.
I've explained my viewpoint and agreed that my initial statement, however innocent and non-judgemental towards its users, could be viewed as hostile and judgemental.
Thankfully, I'm not one of those people who says things like "I think Twitter is utterly pointless and idiotic" but is actually meaning "anyone who uses Twitter is utterly pointless and idiotic". To me, these are two very different subjects. I'm sorry, but I'm just not that devious or passive aggressive.
So, I'm sorry you took my statement as an attack on the users of Twitter; but by the same token you were putting thoughts into my head with absolutely no knowledge of my thoughts or reasoning.
I love 3D. Other people think it's a stupid trick and detracts from the movies and totally pointless. I would like to think those same people wouldn't think I'm stupid and pointless for liking it....but if they did think that? I don't care.
There are some people I think are idiots though (as do we all) and here's a few examples (if offence is taken feel free to call me stupid!): 1. Anyone who buys a painting to match their furniture. 2. Anyone who buys their curtains to match their couch or vice versa. 3. People who think a band/album/song/movie/book is excellent simply because it reached the top of the appropriate chart. 4. People who won't watch an film because a certain actor is starring in it based solely on the fact they don't like the person in interview. 5. People who's movie collection is made up entirely of supposed 'cool' or 'intellectual' items listed by some critic somewhere.
See, I can be just as judgemental as the next person...but, if I'm going to be then I try not to do it by being backhanded or sly. | | | Last edited: by Pantheon |

1. Anyone who buys a painting to match their furniture. Why? I don't get it... Quoting Pantheon: Quote:
2. Anyone who buys their curtains to match their couch or vice versa. Again, why? If I had a couch I loved.. and say a some drapes I thoguht would go well with it... why would that be a bad thing? I wouldn't waste my money on such wasteful things when my Blu-ray wish list is a mile long! Quoting Pantheon: Quote:
3. People who think a band/album/song/movie/book is excellent simply because it reached the top of the appropriate chart. Agreed. I've tried telling my 10 and 12 year old girls the same thing! Quoting Pantheon: Quote:
4. People who won't watch an film because a certain actor is starring in it based solely on the fact they don't like the person in interview. eh, I get where you are coming from and somewhat agree. I do think people should let go of their prejudices and judge a film on it's own merits. THere are only a handful of actors I loathe (Jared Leto!) but still love some of the movies they are in. 5. People who's movie collection is made up entirely of supposed 'cool' or 'intellectual' items listed by some critic somewhere. Criterions come to mind... Don't get me wrong, they do some great work, but just because a film is a CC release doesn't make it any better because of it. Quoting Pantheon: Quote:
Just an opinion...Twitter is the most inane, boring, totally pointless invention in the history of man
Quite the broad statement. Like others have pointed out, a tad reactionary. I have a twitter account, but rarely check it, and tweet even less. But I can see how it could be fun & useful. A long ways from being the most pointless invention in the history of man! | | | HDTV: 52" Toshiba Regza 52XV545U AVR: Onkyo TR-707 Speakers: Paradigm Monitor 7 v6, CC-190 & Atom Monitors Subwoofer: Definitive Technology ProSub 800 BD/DVD: Oppo BDP-93 (Region Free) HD PVR: Motorola DXC3400 500GB w/ 1TB Expander BD/DVD/Game: 250GB PS3 Slim DVD/Game: 250GB XBox 360 Elite Special Edition (Black) Game: Wii Remote: Logitech Harmony One w/ PS3 Adapter WHS: Acer H341 Windows Home Server | | | Last edited: by DoubleDownAgain |
