...(I've always wondered why there was no community effort to record all this data in an open source format, not specifically this community, just in general. Plenty of open source 'movie' databases, but they don't track the versions and editions etc., etc.) Well, it has been proposed in the feature request forum to start making an effort to separate movie data from disk data -- likewise series data (Game of Thrones) from disk data. Because the movie/series producers, cast and crew are pretty much independent of the data associated with the disk release (the latter being: media format, sound options, aspect ratio on disk, first release date, covers etc). (Though there are rare exceptions where the disk publication causes for example cast variations, for instance if a censor blocks a scene occurring everywhere else in the world on disk invalidating perhaps an actor credit). It would certainly reduce the problem of reducing the huge variantions between profiles being as many as there are localities but just one movie... (series...)). To date I haven't seen any indication Invelos will follow up on this. Not sure about open source format though. Looks like technical innards, also, people could abuse the data gathered here for freebie contributions to Imdb and the like. With Imdb claiming it to be their property subsequently... | | | Eric

Quote: I get that the intersection between 1. people who buy DVD, 2. people who want to record their collection, 3. people who use DVD Pro and 4. people who have the energy to input data is small, but it's definitely getting smaller.
That energy you speak of was quickly sapped by just how convoluted the simple process of submitting data to the database became. The rules have become a vernacular only known to cliquey few here who demand you adhered to them without question. Cause you are a nothing and they are the omnipotent gods of the database.
Frankly i don't blame Ken for not doing much in the way of improving the program. I hope he is on a beach somewhere far away from the BS his program has spawned. Because i don't think he ever envisioned it getting so preposterous.
Yeh, some of the submission rules do seem a little tough going, it's why I only ever submit an initial profile with the basic stuff you can get from the DVD/Bluray case. I don't find that too onerous, but I do have to keep checking the submission FAQ every now and then (mainly because I don't submit hundreds). What's sad is these people spending hours deliberating over the common name of a Chinese stunt double from a 50's western (no exaggeration, seriously). Probable never watch the majority of there DvDs. | | | Last edited: by ShinyDiscGuy |

| Posted: | | | | First, I don't know the number of owners of this program, But when I log on, I always check the base FORUM tab to see how many and who is logged on. I don't notice as many people logged on as in the past. Also there are more pieces to the puzzle, what with all the apps. I don't what the relative price of DVDs are all over world, but initial price of first releases have increased, example the prices list for pre-release orders of Oscar nominated movies. Also there are a number sites where one can watch both the movies or TV series episodes free or for a nominal fee. The number web sites, TV station, and subjects to be placed on the media seem to be increasing exponentially.
I think profiles by Locality numbers are better indication than regions, especially since more and more discs are accessible by any region. Locality Any 646,460 Australia 33,022 Austria 1,749 Belgium 15,676 Brazil 11,161 Canada 17,997 Canada (Quebec) 5,042 China 1,034 Denmark 21,112 Finland 14,411 France 45,560 Germany 79,990 Italy 21,533 Mexico 3,021 Netherlands 45,225 Norway 17,750 Portugal 10,921 Sweden 17,212 Switzerland 11,496 UK 67,299 US 155,739
North America and Western Europe are clearly the majority of profiles in the online data base.
For discs other than R1, But for other regions, I don't think the contributes in general are of the same quality or quantity.
Maybe it is the language, I don't know, but what few times I have tried to mine, (copy), some data off contributions other than R1 although there are profiles, I find the contributions clearly lacking.
Maybe there are just many things to keep up with today, I started out to go shipping for groceries today, it is 2:00 PM I haven't got to it. | | | We don't need stinkin' IMDB's errors, we make our own. I find that they are usually of high quality, mainly because there isn't as much 'back and forth'. Also, you'll find far more people in Europe likely import than those in America/Canada, especially back in the days of sites such as DVDSoon. The weak $ used to make new releases less than half the price I could buy them locally, even after shipping costs. The gap isn't so big now price wise though. |

But Ken could solve most of these problems by having a presence in the forums (or at least someone empowered by Invelos to make rulings) to dissuade any arguments over the data. A quick ruling and modification of the rules when some weird issue appears would remove most of the neverending debates. Hopefully an upgrade is coming soon (like 4.0) that will reinvigorate the user base and add the features that have been frustrating us for the last few years... |

However, this was very clear. mediadogg is one of the developpers who worked much to help contributors, with plugin that takes automatically some data from disc. The problem with contributions is the rules, that prefer carbon copy of errors, or adding errors, rather than correct data. That is the reason why I stopped contributing, and stopped using online database. | | | Images from movies |

I will say the English speaking nations do tend to be better than non speaking nations and most western Europe. But I was going to try my hand at profiling a complete, cast & crew, of the Bruno Cremer Maigret series which I have all 54 episodes (discs). I figured that do to the popularity of the Maigret novels, which I read many decades ago, (I think 22 different actors have played the lead) that surely there would be some profiles with usable data. There were 104 Profiles, 2 of them were mine with a different actor. None of them had anything usable. | | | We don't need stinkin' IMDB's errors, we make our own. Ineptocracy, You got to love it.
