In my prior post, I forgot to answer the original question.

I use the main program primarily as a catalogue. I use the sharing feature to maintain one master copy. All my PCs and Android devices synchronize to the master. When I have a movie night, I project DVDP on the screen and let my guests browse around and read the overviews, etc. Then we pick something.

Somehow, I have not used the Online much. The Android version is a super fast way of adding items by UPC scan and making sure I don't buy dupes.

I am not good at contributions. I have tried, but I usually don't have the patience to get it right. But I will doggedly chase a plugin bug for days - so that's how I prefer to use my time. It helps keep my mind sharp and serves as a companion hobby to collecting music videos. That's why I mess around with media oriented plugins.

As a programmer, I have always appreciated the combination of clever and organized user interface, the huge array of functions and the relative stability of the program. I own a lot of software, and DVDP ranks pretty much near the top in terms of value for the money. This is not to start any kind of debate - of course there are other opinions. That just happens to be mine.
Thanks for your support.

Use mine to keep track of my collection and also watched and unwatched. My collection has grown quite large, and I sometimes also use it to find what to watch. Looking through everything on my shelves can be tiresome and overwhelming.

It's also nice to have insurance-wise.

I mostly care about having the release information (studios, year of production etc) and nice cover art. Don't care about cast & crew, and that's the reason why I rarely vote on contributions anymore. I get tired of clicking through tons of small changes to cast & crew (birth year, AKA). Wish it was possible to hide contributions which only have changes to cast & crew.

. I also create profiles for interesting short movies given as bonus.

I see I'm not the only one....I do the exact same thing. Every theatrically released short that I own, be it a bonus feature to the main movie (eg: Warner Night at the Movies) or a collection of shorts (eg: The Complete Jean Vigo, The films of Kenneth Anger) gets its own profile. One film=one profile.

I do as well, at least the ones I'm aware of... I added the Hotel Chevalier to The Darjeeling Limited.  I"m sure I have more that I would add if I would be aware of them. I hope that we might be allowed to contribute them.

That is different, though, from the way I do it.
In my local database The Darjeeling Limited gats a profile, and Hotel Chevalier also gets its own (separate) profile...thus: one film=one profile.
I do not use parent/child profiles. This is not to suggest that you are "wrong" in your approach, or that I'm "right" in mine.....different strokes for different folks.
My (only) concern is in cataloging the movies (as opposed to discs, even though all my movies are on DVD/Bluray)) that I own.

How do you use DVD Profiler?

Since you asked,,,,,like this....

(Take 2)

To catalog the movies I own on DVD/Blu-ray discs.

I have 2 collection categories: "Films" and "Short Films" (I use the Academy criteria: any film 40 minutes or less is a "short")

I also have temporary collection categories where films are assigned to before all credits are checked.
Cast, crew, film credits are taken directly off the film print. For 'uncredited' credits I rely on several trustworthy databases (IMDB not being one of them) and my own 50 + years in watching movies.
Once all credits are checked, the film gets transfered to "Films" if a feature or to "Short Films" if a short.
All my discs are Movies (theatrical, made for TV, direct-to-video). I do not own any TV shows.
A film (feature or short) gets only one profile in my database, even if I own multitle editions of the same film (these editions are denoted in notes).
Casablanca (1942): one single profile (I own 3 editions), The Wizard of OZ (1939): one single profile (I own 5 editions), etc.

Fields/features in DVDP that are important to me:
Title
Year produced (year film released)
Run time
Country of origin (of film)
Studios
Aspect ratio (must be in the original ratio)
Language (must be in, or include, the original language film was shot in)
Cast
Crew
Overviw section
Notes section
Covers (I use posters for "front" cover, photos of cast/crew for "rear" cover)

Any fields having to do with the product (disc) do not interest me and I leave most, if not all, blank.

I utilize 5 windows, or screens, or tabs, or whatver they are called.

Screen one: Collection List (diveded in "Films", "Short Films" and several temporay categories

Screen two: General Info and Audio/Video

Screen three: Cast & Crew

(This one for Ship of Fools (1965))

Screen four: Overview & Notes
(This one for Machuca (2004))

(This one for the short A Really Important Person (1947))

Screen five: Covers

The layout I use lets me upload images of any size I want. These images are clikable to full size, filling the width of my screen, for height I use the scroll bar

(This one for the animated short Slap Happy Lion (1947))

(This one for Dracula (1931))

Dracula (1931) poster ("front" cover)

Dracula (1931) cast/crew photos ("rear cover")

I use DVD Profiler like the program in my own personal museum of movies.  I track the movies that I own, the movies on my wishlist and I keep smaller catalogs within my database, for example all the MCU movies and all my Criterions.

I definitely appreciate and use the add-ins from the community, mainly Database Query, CCV Plugin and the ASIN to EAN Converter.

I use the ios app to avoid double dips while I am out and keep my desktop collection and mobile collections updated at least weekly, every Tuesday.

I am the curator of my own library.

I use DVD profiler to keep track of my collections.
Pity though that only DVD HDDVD and Blu-Ray can be put online.
I would liked to have other media collections also online like Laser-discs, Video Tapes, CD's and Books.
