You should see the amount of money I spend monthly on CD's and DVD's...

Now that I can sympathize with, my average is about $600/month, just on DVDs and BDs, I am afrid to think about CDs.

Hello Julian,

The headshot images are not stored as seperate files but are included in the cast database.

But they can be.  There is no need for all of this extra work.  As pointed out in this post, that everyone seems to have ignored, you can simply place the properly named JPG image into the appropriate directory and be done with it.

It seems a lot easier, to me at least, to share the actual images instead of a db that has to be restored.

I didn't ignore this because I thought it was a bad idea - but because I have collected a lot of images which are now in the database - and I don't have any means of easily extracting the images. The thought of manually going through saving individual images.. yuk

It seems strange that Invelos came up with an alternative method of holding these images but at the same time almost made this only usable by people who didn't have any existing headshot collection so they could start from scratch.

I live in hope that invelos will produce the obvious tool to extract headshots..

Paul:

That won't happen. Two reasons, first the prive has to go up to cover the licensing costs to those who own the copyrights. Second they would have to start cutting copyright royalty checks...to HOW MANY copyright holders., probably at least on a quarterly basis if not monthly. That is another cost, and on top of that they would have to create a system to track the downloads, so that they and the copyright holders would know how big a check to write and to whom...another cost. This gets expensive ...REAL FAST.

Don't hold your breath, my friend and don't look for it.

Skip

Umm...maybe I'm missing something here, but I don't see how creating a utility to extract our headshots from the database file and dumping them into a directory is going to generate any licensing costs.  As far as Invelos is concerned, any photos I have for my headshots are my property.  It's not their responsibility to determine the origin of my private data.

A tool created by Invelos would create precisekly that liability, midnit. You do not own the rights to those pictures, the copyright holder does and they are legally entitled to be compensated for use of their property. Now fair use would allow YOU to download an image and store it, not share it. The activity here is sharing and that is a blatant violation of the rights of those who do own the pictures. If Invelos created such a tool, it would become their legal liability to see to it that the copyright holders were paid.

This a very simple legal concept. Invelos can legally do no more than they have done, provide a space and take a hands off attitude to its use. There have been some test cases in the past that argue that even what they have done is too much, the argument is that by providing the space they encourage those who are inclined to violate the law. I think these cases have had mixed results to date, and i don't believe any have gone to the high court.

There has been the aspect of which you refer, but there are also those that want more. Even pauls comment says "It seems strange that Invelos came up with an alternative method of holding these images but at the same time almost made this only usable by people who didn't have any existing headshot collection so they could start from scratch." Which indicates to me wants Invelos to vreate something that allows the sharers to not lose what they have done...won't happen.

Thanks, cvermeylen, for the advice - that worked very well!

If you want me to re-send the corrupted headshots, please drop me a line (you'll have to let me know which ones they were).

Sorry to have stirred up something of a hornet's nest with my request!

First of all, that's a pretty amazing assumption you just made there.

Second of all, Invelos doesn't seem to have much of a problem letting me stuff my photos into the database.  Now that the program can read external photos, it doesn't seem unreasonable to be able to pull them out.  If there's any sort of liability for handling this type of data, they are already up a creek for touching it in the first place during the import process.  Frankly, your argument doesn't hold an ounce of water.  It's far more likely that Ken just plain doesn't have the time for it.

I don't call this thread fum, I call it endangering every member of the communtiy and the program. Especially when you have user come and openly thumb there nose at the law, which was what started my discussion do you recall that, if not see the post by Fraggle. Then you have cver openly listing pictures, which could and should have been done PRIVATELY. I don't appreciate people, you can fuss at me all you wish, but the actions in this thread are outrageous and likely illegal.

While your intentions are good, you are hijacking this thread. If Ken wishes these things to not happen due to potential legal consequences then he will stop it himself... Until then please continue to follow all laws yourself and do not concern yourself with others. This thread solely exists to discuss and share headshots, by entering this thread and trying to derail it you are not following the forum rules.

Thank You.

A speeding ticket on it's own is a misdemeanor and a whole lot lower penalty than copyright violation, deejay. Should it be a felony with such a heavy penalty, that's not my job, I only deal with what it is. If they want to change it, that's fine. Although i don't think they will.

Don't be too sure about that, kulju. If I use a program that is generated somewhere else and copyrighted, it falls upon me to b aware of whatever laws may have an impact upon me and that includes that countries copyright laws, because the US is apart of the international copyright treaty. the US is not a bunch of bandits.
