That's what I do for the ones I want that don't exist but tags cannot be displayed in the collection list and used to sort.....my two cents anyway....well since I already posted in this thread I'm up to 4 cents now

Thats exactly my feelings also, I agree it should be local but it would be better if it was an alternative to the current tags, as mine are plentiful already for various different selection reasons

I'm not sure if these have already been suggested or commented on, but I would like to see:

Silent - comedy (dozens of them)
Silent - drama (Sunrise, ect)
Silent - documentary (Nanook of the North, ect)

So far the top nominees are Film Noir, Crime, and Children's.

There's almost no end to the number of possible genres, and for every requested genre there's someone who specifically doesn't want that one.  The tag system fits well for this since it is heirarchal and completely personal.

I see why you'd give up: mosts requests are far too specific. But please consider just adding the three "top nominees" from your original post? Especially "crime" - we really need that one.

Although my top nominees are different, I agree with Tim that at least the genres mentioned in the first post of this thread should be added.

I'm all for expanding genres but I'm kinda leary when it comes to crime as a genre.  90% of films today involve some aspect of crime.  I can see it now...Snow White: Animation/Family/Fantasy/Crime.
Crime?  Well...the evil Queen poisoned Snow White with that apple...and that's a crime!

I agree with you 8Ball, Crime is far too broad and should be used only locally through Tags.

I think it would be good if we could have a discussion starting from scratch as to what the "top level" genre categories should be. Basically forget the existing genres and try and get some agreement as to what genre list we would need to cover everything. Then update the genres list in the program with that.

Not sure if Ken will go for that, but that's what I'd like, personally.

I'm sure with a bit of discussion we could all eventually agree on a minimum number of genres that are absolutely necessary to cover everything. Hey, I'm an optimist

Skip, I am curious why you would say this.  On one hand, you seem to be an advocate of using the TAG system.  Even going so far as to tell many here that what they are asking for as new genres can be accomplished by using tags.  But you also seem to be very protective of removing such non-genre items like "Classic" and "Accessories" from the genre drop-down.  I don't get that.  Surely, it is not just because you and others may "find Classic to be useful".  Why can't you use a tag for Classic which is a totally arbitrary designation?

Since we're into the whole genre updating business, could we please have "Classic" removed? I don't see how anyone should be able to judge a movie as a classic. To me, it seems that a movie made before 1980 is sure to get it and especially if it is B/W. Throw it out, it has no use!

I completely agree too. Weather or not a movie or a TV show is a "Classic" is very much a matter of subjective personal opinion. I don't think it is really a legitimate genre and so it should be removed.

David:

ALL Genre are subjective and in the eyes of the beholder. Ken added Classic from Day ONE of the program. I do not favor removing anything, he can add but don't remove.

And BTW David because the Genre and even the Ordering of genre is subjective is why we wrote the Rules for genre as we did.

Some of us David, find Classic to be useful as we do Television(also not a genre)

It's very simple. Do I think Classic ot TV is a genre...NO. But Ken did and that's enough. There also has to be a point at which users take recognition of the FACT that if Ken paid attention to every request for Genre we would have a list of 1000 or more different possibilities and sub-possibilities.  Do I want to have to deal with that, and I don't think you would either. We already KNOW  the Genre are totally subjective, which is why we wrote the Rules as we did. So users need to realize this and also realize that tyhey have the ability to use Tags to set up just as many Genre as he wants. it is hierarchial and searchable.

Don't get me wrong.  I am not in favor of adding anything to GENRE in the contributory database.  Quite the contrary.  That is why I am in favor of removing those items in there now that really don't belong, such as "Classic", "Accessories" and maybe a few others.

I don't think I feel as strongly as you do that genres, by definition, are totally subjective.  For example, most would agree that Gone With the Wind and Casablanca should be classified as a "Drama".  Still others could agree that both should also be categorized as "Romance".  How about "War"?  Strictly speaking, I suppose a war is going on during both these films, but would most folks here vote yea or nay on adding (or removing) "War" as a genre?

I think that is what the debate here should be about.  Not about adding a slew of tags or keywords or sub-genres that are indeed totally subjective and best left in a local profile as tags or keywords or whatever you want to call them.  Out of curiosity, I took a look at the "keywords" attached to GWTW in the IMDb.  Take a look at them at this link:  http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0031381/keywords .
Most of those terms are totally useless to a general population but may mean a great deal to an individual user in a local environment.

That's what I think anyway.  Keep it simple.  Keep it real.

Hi all, first post here, and I've read a lot of good stuff in this thread, but just so splintered, here a bit, there a bit.

I would love the genres to be editable as the Tags are, but realize that may not be possible (for the uploading/downloading on information, I suppose).

Personally, I have tags called "StandUp" and "Remake", and "True Story"
Probably 5% percent of all I own is Standup.
Examples for Remakes:  Insomnia, Ring, The Pledge, Ocean's Eleven, 12 Angry Men, Lolita etc.
True Story: Amistad, Ali, JFK, Remember the Titans, Untouchables...

Foreign is another good one:  I am a European living in the US, and Foreign is a big thing for me.  Everybody knows "DasBoot", but that's about it.  I like to filter on Foreign only to see things like "Tampopo", "Stalingrad", or my Russian movies.

That's just about the categories I already read about.  I would like to see a "Crime" category for movies like "Bone Collector" ; "Angel Heart" ; "Shawshank"  ; "Chicago"

And as I have a lot of suspense, I would like to sort out the Blood/Gore, which would also be a tag applicable to certain War movies.

Another thing should be "Independent"...

In general, it would be great, if the top level and maybe second Genres would be limited to a static list, and the 3rd level and maybe 4th level could be personalized.

"Texas Chainsaw Massacre" is Horror, Crime, Blood/Gore, based on true events

"Ocean's Twelve"  currently is downloaded as:  Comedy, Suspense/Thriller, Action
Where is "Crime" or "Heist/Robbery"?

I could even imagine how this could be done, even without giving up control of the static toplevel categories.

Let's say we have 20 top level categories.  Those should not be changed much, if ever.  Second level could be a mutually agreed list from these Forums, that can be downloaded.  Third and forth level can be edited as anyone likes.

Each category could be represented like an IP-address, 1. is Action, 2. is Drama, 3. is Family, 4. is Romance, 5. could my Crime, 6. could be True Story etc.

Then 5.1 could be Crime.Heist,
5.2 could be Crime.Murder,
5.3 could be Crime.Court,
5.4 Could be Crime.Jail,
5.5 Could be Crime.Government,
5.6 Could be Crime.Spies,
5.7 Could be Crime.Theft,
5.8 Could be Crime.HateCrime,
etc. etc.

Then under Crime.Court. could be
5.3.1 capital punishment  (Murder in the first, Green Mile, Dead man Walking, etc)
5.3.2 insurance (Erin Bronkovich, Rainmaker)

and so on, you figure.

6. could be True Story etc.
6.1 Based on true events (Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Mothman Prophecies)
6.2 Based on true account (JFK, Color Purple)
6.3 Fictonal loosely based on true events (Saving Private Ryan, Pearl Harbor)

And the Software could store all of that in lookup tables.  But for their our purposes, they could disregard everything after the toplevel-genre. Disregard during display, just not purge.

Now, go at it, let me have it

That one used to be available as a genre in 2.x, it was removed in 3, not really sure why but I think a lot of people agreed it wasn't actually a genre.

And that's a good thing. Because nearly 99% of my collection is foreign.I'm Norwegian, so that means all foreign movies are the ones not from my country. I hope it doesn't get back in.

As we probably may never get new genres due to many personal differences, I would like to point everybody to this topic where there has been explained how to add genres via an alternative method.

"Crime" is indeed a genre that i would like to see added. But also "history/historic", for movies like braveheart, kingdom of heaven, patriot, gladiator etc....
