| Posted: | | | | More and more I read posts where people who contribute to the database believe that those of us who have yet to muster the time or inclination of adding massive quantities (or any quantity) to the database are somehow shirking our duties. I find at least two dozen contributions here (including scans) I made at IVS submitted by users other than me. I await a calming of the tidal wave of submissions, and a period of time where I have not spent scanning hundreds of items for clients (I have a webpage to design with 150 or so photos which was supposed to be up in mid-December 2006) before I start resubmitting. I appreciate all the submissions, even the ones of my scans. But this carping on those of us who have yet to find the time is very offputting. Why must this place turn on others, pushing us away? | | | If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

| Posted: | | | | As far as I'm concerned, if you keep the funny cat pictures coming, you're doing your part. There's no obligation to submit anything. That's not part of the user agreement. I don't know who's been given you grief, but I wouldn't take it too seriously. | | | Get the CSVExport and Database Query plug-ins here. Create fake parent profiles to organize your collection. |

In addition to my own businesses (graphic design studio, advertising agency), my part time job has suddenly increased from 20 hours a week to 26-30 hours, and I am in a surf band, where we play extensively during the summer months... two gigs next week, two in early June, some in late June & early July... most are a few hours drive out of town this year. And from the 19th through Memorial Day, I'm moving my Mother to Arizona. Then from the 5th of July until the end of July I take my first family vacation in a couple years to Hawaii, attending my wife's nephew's wedding, a reunion with both a classmate of my daughter's and a skater she appeared in many shows with... So until August (when I expect more business, more gigs and a new website for a new soccer team), I suspect I will be unable to contribute anything beyond a lolcat in a few threads. | | | If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

| Posted: | | | | I enjoy the cat pics. I have not given, Cliff any grief over Contributions. he and I disagree sometimes on images, no big deal, since none of us has the same set of eyeballs and see things exactly the same way, but he also recognizes that.

| Posted: | | | | No, Skip has not given me any grief -- no one has, directly. But there are posts where Skip and many others (I know Skip will forgive me for this, because it's true) will criticize complainers who have yet to contribute to the datbase... that somehow, only by being a contributor gives one the right to level criticism. I see this as a new trend; unseen until the past week or three. Where criticism was not answered with logic, but with a refutation of the person for not having earned a right to want more, want better, want the garbage to stop. So, I hope to contribute ideas, lolcats, and eventually, many DVD profiles which are yet to be added to the database. | | | If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

| Posted: | | | | Well, if the complaint is that a certain DVD hasn't been contributed, then it does sound somewhat hypocritical if the complainer hasn't contributed themselves. |

I don't anybody has a problem with those who haven't contributed much if its simply a matter of lack of time/resources/expertise. When the bitching starts, its usually because some yahoo starts carping about "how come nobody has entered such-and-such yet". These are the same kind of idiots who used to make bombing runs in the old Fido BBS echoes once every six months. | | | John

| Posted: | | | | John, I agree. But the complaints were not about a lack of data.
They were more general complaints, mainly about the lack of communication during the lawsuit: typical newb failure to read the dozens of threads where we discussed the lawsuit, its possible outcome(s), and asking basic questions about the future of DVDProfiler. When Skip (& others) suggested that the newb read the entire forum to get the answers, it was often rude... (Sometimes suggesting the Search feature be used, despite the frustration Skip -- and others -- had expressed about the Search feature at IVS.)
When the newb complained that all they wanted was a simple answer and that it would have been just as easy to answer as to suggest the newb spend a few days researching the various threads and all our digressions, the answer was often to point out how little the newb had invested in the program -- specifically how few contributions they had made.
Often these newbs were new to the forum, not to owning the program. The program had worked fine for them in the past. They might never have visited the forums, but were driven to by the lack of updates. They might even have been unfamiliar with how any forum works, let alone the dynamics of this one (ie: does Skip really run the show? is he an employee? is he just a bully? or is he merely exasperated?). But some of us blasted them for using the program for years while contributing nothing to the database.
My question and concern remains: Can one raise questions about the program without having to have made many contributions, or does one only get citizenship through service? | | | If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

| Posted: | | | | I think I remember the thread you might be referring to. If it is that thread, the guy was an ass and had it coming. I can't honestly see someone attacking you for your current lack of contributions. But if someone comes through here and starts attacking the program/Ken/Invelos/other users/the process/etc, I can totally see something like that being thrown back in their face. Not that it's called for or justified, but it's really kind of low hanging fruit.
Like it or not, we do have some real boneheads show up every so often. And they tend to come in firing both guns and ask questions later. | | | Get the CSVExport and Database Query plug-ins here. Create fake parent profiles to organize your collection. |
