With the thousands upon thousands of DVDs out there, there are bound to be countless great discs that are simply overlooked.  I thought I'd start a thread to bring some of these to light.  Please let people know of gems that either people won't have heard of (local production), or stuff that people might know of but don't realise has been given a release (locality-exclusive) ... then offer some convincing!

I'll set the ball rolling with a real doozy (that's not even in the database at all):

Stash DVD Magazine
Now before you get started, this is an ongoing collection of DVDs, not simply a magazine that includes a DVD or just talks about them!  Issue 33 was just released (June 6, 2007).

From their website:
Quote:
What's included with an issue of Stash?
Every monthly issue of STASH includes a DVD showcasing outstanding commercials, music videos, broadcast design, branded content, virals, game cinematics and short films PLUS behind the scenes extras, bonus films and music tracks. Also tucked inside the DVD case you'll find the 40-page companion book of production notes, color pix, credits and links.

Here are just a few of my selections taken from various issues:

The Tale of How (also available in higher quality from The Blackheart Gang's official website)

Alive in Joburg (by the director of the upcoming Halo movie)

Bendito Machine

Apart from their most recent few issues they don't have stock, BUT... they offer "sixpacks" that have six issues in one fatpack (I assume, I've not bought one yet).  These are jam-packed with cool content.  Youtube up some more stuff that catches your eye, but certainly don't let this slip under your radar any longer!  I'm trying to budget my DVD spending so I can funnel some towards buying these.

(If I get some suggestions in this thread) I'll post up other finds.

My favorite is Wholphin, a quarterly DVD magazine from McSweeney's.

To quote them:
"Wholphin is a new quarterly DVD magazine from McSweeney's, lovingly encoded with unique and ponderable films designed to make you feel the way we felt when we learned that dolphins and whales sometimes, you know, do it.
"What, you may ask, is a Wholphin? Photographic evidence can be found languishing in the nooks and crannies of the internet, but those too busy to visit Google for the 28th time today can trust us that it's the lovechild of a bottlenose dolphin and a false killer whale. A beautiful hybrid born of invention and exploration.
"Available immediately by subscription and distributed quarterly in the same places you'll find McSweeney's and The Believer, each issue of Wholphin will contain a variety of extraordinary short films, docs, instructional videos, foreign sitcoms, and other cinema hybrids that deserve to be seen on very expensive televisions."

The past two issues (and the one about to be mailed, #4) contain a bonus disc featuring installments of Adam Curtis's The Power of Nightmares. These alone have made these issues facinating to me, and those were bonuses!

All issues are still available.
If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

Cliff
