| Posted: | | | | m.cellophane mentioned a web site (see AFI’s second Best List – do you agree?) that lists great films from any country, not just the US. A few others also mentioned loving films that were not mentioned because they were not American. I had only heard about a few and I’m wondering what films you would recommend that could not be included because of this. Soooo…what movies would you recommend I buy because it would make your Best List? |

| Posted: | | | | I'd second Amélie. It's one of my favorites and is where my avatar comes from. It's also very much a chick flick if you like those kinds of movie. I also love pretty much anything from Jean-Pierre Jeunet (A Very Long Engagement, Delicatessen, others).
I like Akira Kurosawa. He's done such films as Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, The Hidden Fortress, Rashomon, Stray Dog and many, many others.
Though they're not often thought of as foreign, I love Sergio Leone's films (A Fistful of Dollars, A Few Dollars More, Once Upon a Time in the West, Once Upon a Time in America, Duck You Sucker (AKA A Fistful of Dynamite) and of course, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly).
If you really want to experiment with something different, try Krzysztof Kieslowski's Three Colors Trilogy (Blue, White, Red).
I just picked up Downfall over the weekend (Der Untergang). It's supposed to be an excellant story of Hitler's final days. And if you like war films, you can't go wrong with Das Boot.
There's many, many others. But those are some of my favorites. | | | Get the CSVExport and Database Query plug-ins here. Create fake parent profiles to organize your collection. |

| Posted: | | | | Take a look at the Criterion Collection and take your pick Clouzot, for instance, "Diabolique" & "The Wages of Fear". "Coup de torchon' (Tavernier) is also a favorite (based on Pop. 1280 by Jim Thompson which I read last year and is even more weird that the movie, so look and read both if you know what's good for you). |
