| | Posted: | | | | The first round and I already have to go with the remake. Scorcese is one of my favorite director and as usual DeNiro is great in it. But I can say nothing about the original since I didn't view it. I almost buy it when the 2 was in the same pack, but I miss it and since this time I never think about that again. Now that you mention it, I will probably place an order. |

Robert Mitchum was better than De Niro in this case. A role for a movie star as big as they can get.
Gregory Peck is always better than Nick Nolte. This is Atticus, for goodnes sake!
I could root for the family. Scorcese's clan were seriously dysfunctional. I know that's the point, but I still like the originals basic light v dark approach.
Finally, wasn't Spielberg originally down to direct? I've always felt that Scorcese tried to mimic his style a little, which he has no need to do. Maybe production was quite far along and it was too late to make it truly his own? | | | Jon

Robert DeNiro is awesome in his portrayal of the ex-con bent on revenge, Nolte gives a solid performance as someone forced to deal with a situation he can't cope with, Jessica Lange is ... nice, and Juliette Lewis is the perfect cast for the role of a supposedly innocent girl willing to explore the darker side of life.
I did intend to buy the two when released together as a box set, but then went for a really good deal on the two disc special edition of the remake and don't feel like double dipping to own the original. | | | | Lutz |

In the future, I wish you'd resize your page so that it fits the screen without me having to scroll right and left. At home I have a widescreen monitor, but here at work I only have a standard screen. At 1024x768, your uploads are too wide for viewing without horizontal scrolling. So for this thread (and the one about Black Sheep, for example) it's a nuisance to have to scroll left & right - especially to read the text. So, would it be too much to ask to limit yourself to something that would fit on a 1024x768 screen? (I suppose there are some out there that still use a 640-wide screen but I'd guess not that many.)
