No, says the man in Washington. It belongs to the poor. No, says the man in the Vatican. It belongs to God. No, says the man in Moscow. It belongs to everyone.
I rejected those answers. Instead, I chose something different. I chose the impossible. I chose… Rapture." |

I quit cold turkey August 9th 2002 from a carton a week habit. The first week really sucked but if you last that week, chances are you'll stay quit. Five years so far for me!
The most important thing in quitting smoking is that you have to truly want to quit. If you're not ready to quit, you won't be successful in quitting. But don't let that stop you from trying, statistics say a person quits on average 8 times before they're successful.
My technique was to switch to Winston's due to their claim of having no addictive additives (which I found to be true). I don't care what Marlboro says, they DO have addictive additives. While used to Winston's, I smoked a Marlboro and when I was finished, I still wanted to smoke more when I normally did not. I kept smoking normally until I ran out and then I stopped. I had made myself a promise to not purchase or borrow any cigs and not take advantage of any loophole in my promise I discovered (and trust me, you will discover them).
Getting over the physical addiction is hard but after a week, you're past the withdraws. Withdraws can take anywhere from 2-7 days. But once you're past the physical addiction, you still have to get past the mental addiction and that could take over a year though it does get easier the longer you go. The tough part is not smoking during times you normally do. The important thing here is to keep up your habits (minus smoking of course). Still take breaks when you normally took your smoke breaks, go sit outside or whatever you normally did while smoking, just don't smoke. Bring a pen along to hold in your fingers to get the tactile sensation you're used to feeling. Soon, you'll notice that you've started to miss your breaks because the mental bookmark you had to get that smoke in is going away. |

...then I guess I should sell the "To Sell" stuff I have, and keep spending to a minimum. I have some big goals to save for this year. Determination will be hard enough... | Posted: | | | | I'm going to cut back on smoking and make the full quit next year. Beyond that I haven't thought of much, except getting my house renovated and ready to live in. Also to invest my money wisely and not look at the stock market everyday, making me panic. Oh yeah, and a more positive outlook, that's gonna be hard as I think the pessimisim is an inborn trait. |

I think the "I won't" resolutions are the hardest, because as soon as you do, it's broken. "I'll try harder to" are good, because if you stumble you can use that to build your resolve. | | | Adelaide Movie Buffs (info on special screenings, contests, bargains, etc. relevant to Adelaideans... and contests/bargains for other Aussies too!) |
