I saw part of a movie on the IFC channel a while back.  It was about an English/Scottish couple who went to the Amazon (or some similarly lush undeveloped area) to take a mapmaking/surveying/engineering job.  Once they arrive, things are not quite as they seem but they cannot leave because the boat that brought them there will not return for months due to the level of the water in the river.

The husband is offered more money to complete the job on a very tight timetable.  However, he becomes gravely ill while in the jungle.  The wife is desperate for a cure and is offered one, but the price she must pay is to be unfaithful to her husband.  As best I can remember the story took place in the later 1800's early 1900's.  The end shot of the movie involves the boat returning.

I may have some of the plot details wrong, but this is the general gist of the story.

Any ideas?

No guesses even?  What if I at least added some incentive.  If someone gets it right I'll offer up a free dvd  .  I'll put up a list of five or so to choose from.  May not be the most spectacular titles but they'll be free and new and sealed in their cases.

Not sure of the title, but it sounds like that film with Sean Connery.

There's some quite knowledgeable folks there too. They did help me find the title of an obscure film, when various forum posts elsewhere failed to come up with anything. Imdb is good for a few things after all.

...I honestly haven't a clue about the film in question Peacefrog, sorry.

Could you possibly narrow the time frame down a bit? Was it this year or...?

Forget my suggestion. The movie I was thinking of is "Medicine Man" the plot does not match your description.

Sorry.

Peacefrog,

I had some time to kill so I just spent 20 minutes searching for a movie with the keywords in your description. I used Google, Ask.com, Answers.com, searched the IFC site and who knows what else. And came up with bupkiss!  I am now on a quest to help you. (I also found a page where another user quoted your post to try and find the answer.)

I did find a book that has a similar plot on Amazon.com, "The Mapmaker's Wife".

I used to do such research for a living and I am like a pitbull when I run up against brick walls. I leave on vacation tomorrow and want to find your answer before I leave.

I guess I am the movie Man of La Mancha!

Someone on the Need to Know board suggested "The Intended." IMDb doesn't have much about it and Wikipedia was also a wash, but it sounds like it could be the answer.

Good luck!

Outstanding!  That is the movie I was looking for.  Thanks very much.  You are a helpful lot

I'll post a couple of movies to send out for all the help- if anyone's interested.  Will try to put them up tonight, or tomorrow at the latest.
