They didn't know this when I was small, and the doctor reattached the tip of a finger I'd lost while finding out how a reel lawnmower worked. (Ouch!) I was about 3. My finger is about 1/2 in shorter than it's partner on my right hand and has a damaged nail, but it works okay. I've read where if this happened to me today, they might not reattach the finger and that it would regrow, nail and all.
