I was reading the tv mag today when I noticed that a film on tomorrow had 'HD' in brackets after the description.  A quick search online confirmed that this stood for hi-def.
The film in question is Hero and is on tomorrow (Sun) at 21:05 on C4.  The film immediately after is also listed as HD.

Now I know it wont be anything like watching a film on Blu-ray but how will it look compared to say average freeview broadcasts, BBC brodcasts and DVD?  Also how long has this been going on?  The only time I've seen anything 'HD' on freeview was a single program the Beeb did a few years ago, which looked slightly better but not amazing.

I'll find out when I watch it I suppose but I thought I'd share this in case it was something new.

Edit:  Found some more:
Commando
Brokeback Mountain
Blackball

don't you need a new desktop box for this? I follow the HD story for freesat and it looks promising

I'm talking about Freeview, Freesat is something different.  I've been looking into Freesat myself and will no doubt be going with it sooner or later.

The reason that I was surprised at seeing 'higher def' on freeveiw was that I remember hearing that it wasn't really possible due to the bandwidth limitations.  And that for it to happen a channel or 2 would have to stop broadcasting or a larger number of channels would have to lower their broadcast quality to free up bandwidth for it.

The film starts in a few hours so I'll soon find out, I'll check it out and post on here.

Oops, forgot about this thread.

Anyway the film was definitely not HD or anything close to it (not even DVD quality).  PVR reported a bit-rate comparable to that of an episode of The Simpsons

It was HD if you could watch it on "C4 HD"... Definately available on Satellite (channel 140 on SKY)... not sure about cable or Freesat but as it is a freeview channel I guess it would be.

Yeah I read it was on C4 HD too.  Thing is though, my paper guide and the web guide I linked to both said that it was in HD on C4.  They must've got their wires crossed with C4 and C4 HD

Edit: I don't think C4 HD is available on freesat yet.  Just a BBC one and soon an ITV one IIRC.

from the C4 HD faq:
What will I need to view the Channel 4 HD service?

The Channel 4 HD service will be available on channel 140 via Sky HD only, so you will need to have a Sky HD box and viewing card, as well as an HD ready TV to view.
