According to DVDSavant, next Tuesday will see a half dozen little advertised Best Buy exclusives of old SF movies. This seems peculiar given that Best Buy doesn't seem to be getting in a whole lot of supposedly generally available 20th Century movies lately, aside from a few box sets. (Which is true of more and more DVD outlets -- 20th Century movies are making it to DVD but they aren't making it to shelves.) Anyhow, look for the following at $20 apiece:

World Without End
Satellite in the Sky
When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth
Battle Beneath the Earth
Moon Zero Two
The Ultimate Warrior

When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth has been on my want list soley due to its starring Victoria Vetri, a Playmate of the Year whose centerfold was an extraordinary piece of photography. There is an interesting story about her name.

She was born Victoria Vetri. As if this weren't a great name, she decided to make one up for her career in show business. Inspired by the mysteriously abandoned ship Angela Doria, she became Angela Dorian. Under that name she appeared in Playboy and became Playmate of the Year. Playboy mansion regular Roman Polanski noticed her and hired her for a small role in Rosemary's Baby. In the novel, this character mentions that many people think she looks like Gina Lollobrigida. By the time Rosemary's Baby came out, Gina Lollobrigida was no longer quite as hot as she once was, and the studio did not want to use that comparison. They would use some made-up Italian sounding name. Dorian volunteered her real name, Victoria Vetri, and sure enough, the actress credited as Angela Dorian wound up comparing herself to Victoria Vetri in the movie. Moreover, she switched back to her real name for her subsequent movie career, so that if you see When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth first and then see Rosemary's Baby, you can see that yeah, by damn, that Angela Dorian sure does resemble Victoria Vetri....

Right on both counts. My brain is evidently turning to cheese faster than I thought. I was thinking of the Mary Celeste (see http://www.smithsonianmag.com/history-archaeology/abandoned-200711.html?c=y&page=1).

Well, as I understand, Battle Beneath the Earth demonstrates how to foil a Chinese Communist conspiracty to literally undermine the United States! No telling what sort of sensitive information might be in the other flicks!

However, I believe those two Best Buy exclusive SF/horror packs (of which The Incredible Shrinking Man was the only A-list item) are now available from Amazon as one collection, The Classic Sci-Fi Ultimate Collection (yuck, who is in charge of these moronic titles?). So there is hope for this trio of double bills.

FYI on When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth.  I'm sure most folks who frequent other boards are already aware, but for those who don't, this movie is billed on the packaging as the 96 minute censored G cut.  Turns out, the disk actually contains the 100 minute uncensored cut.  The last time this happened was with a Swamp Thing release.  Some irrate mother complained about the nudity in her G movie and Warners quickly had the stock pulled and eventually reissued the cut version of the disk.  No idea what will happen here but do with the information what you will.

Well, the star of this flick, Victoria Vetri, was just coming off of her stint as playmate of the year.  Presumably in an effort to showcase all of her talents, the director made sure there were a couple of booby shots in the film.  Don't ask me for time stamps because I didn't pay attention.  I think the Dr. Skin website should have that covered. 

the best buy exclusive version of when dinos ruled is the uk print which has the nudity.

There weren't any on the shelves of the local BB in the horror or sci-fi sections so I thought they must have already been recalled, but there they were on the New Releases rack.  So I got mine.  I've been waiting for a proper DVD of WHEN DINOS....  for a long time, so I'm quite glad to get it.

There were still 2 copies at my local, and much smaller compared to neighboring cities, store. They were in teh Sfi-Fi section under Moon, last week they were only on the new release rack.
I'd say instant recall rumors are false, now we just need someone to call.   A bud of mine does a great old lady impression...
