Seriously though, less cheap (free) competition can only be good for Profiler. However I do think that most of the folks who found Spot to be a good solution will never really go for Profiler. | | Posted: | | | | I looked at DVDSpot recently as an option to catalogue my DVDs. Although good for what it is, its database wasn't as extensive as the one here so I chose to pay up and come here instead.
I was poking around their forums a few weeks ago and it seemed that things were turning sour. Apparently the owner had sold the site to CNET and wasn't communicating with the editors anymore which pissed them off. Half of them decided to go on strike I think. Looks like it's finally hit the fan. |

Its main advantage was that it was entirely online based. I could add or change, in addition to viewing my collection, anywhere, on any computer with an online access. I am dearly hoping for an alternative to DVDSpot. I looked at DVDAF, but was not very impressed. I wonder if Ken could add some code to the next version to allow minimal added functionality to the online portion of DVDP, like adding and changing personal info for your collection. It's my understanding that this is exactly what will happen. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I remember the release of 3.5 will be accompanied by "DVD Profiler Online Plus" - what that is exactly remains to be seen, but it's an enhancement to the online view of your collection. If you're in a hurry to get that kind of functionality, you can have a look at one of these user developed tools: phpDVDProfileror phpMyProfilerI don't use either, but I'm sure if you ask around you'll have people willing to share the pros and cons of each, as well as URLs where you can see them in action. I found that I liked it a little bit better for some reason or another, but of course after using it for only a couple months it goes belly up. So now I humbly come crawling back to DVD Profiler. |

I have never understood how anyone could prefer any of the other currently available alternatives. They are all inferior. DVDSpot was not a real database and now those who relied on it are crying their eyes out because their information will no longer be available in the format which they enjoyed. DVD Profiler is an actual program on my computer which I can use without internet access. The cavalier manner in which the owner of DVDSpot has announced its closing is hilarious. Of course he will dump a project which earns him no money in favor of ones which do so. Viva capitalism! One can only hope that this educates people to be wary of free services. |
