And done as well :-)

The line this year was 3 times as long as it was in 2004.  I wonder what the overall turnout numbers will be compared to the last go round.

why?

No matter which way people vote, they should be encouraged to do so since that strengthens democracy.

On the UK TV we have seen queues in America where people have been waiting for more than 4 hours to vote. This shows a commitment to the voting democratic process which should be encouraged not discouraged. How many of those would lose their vote if they had to all wait until the last possible day?

I can sort of agree with the idea of abolishing early voting, but I'd rather see a change in what is allowed in terms of reporting election results and exit polls.

On the one hand I agree that participation in the democratic process should be encouraged, and if allowing for early voting can do that it's a good thing.

On the other hand I think it definitely can impact election results when those early votes are reported on, be it via exit polls or actual tabulation.

Do they count the early votes early? Or are the news just basing their reports on exit polls? Whatever the source of information I think this practice should be declared election tampering and therefore abolished. For that same reason I think East coast results should not be allowed to be reported until the West coast polls have closed.

Maybe it's because this is how it works in Canada already that I prefer the above, but it seems to make a lot of sense to me. Democracy is too precious and fragile of a process to be allowed to be messed with.

In 4hours and 36minutes the first official reports will be in.  I cannot find it now but at about 900am Tucson Time MSNBC was already predicting Obama the winner with 291 electoral votes, and who says the media is bias.

It's not hard to predict an Obama victory, that's what all the polls show at this point.  It's a fairly safe bet.

MSNBC is pretty conservative on the number though.  Karl Rove is predicting 338 electoral votes for Obama.

Rove predicts Obama landslide

It's not over till the fat lady sings of course.  But she's warming up.

I agree.  I think early voting should be abolished.

Why? Reading all the comments here on the political topic it's clear that almost everyone know for which party they will vote already. I always vote by anticipation in our election, I don't have 4 hours to loose waiting to cast a vote when I can do it in 30 minutes one week before.

Seriously don't see the problem with that

The campaign is not over until Election Day, therefore people may not have all of the information they need if they vote early.  It also gives "polsters" the opportunity to potentially skew the results, making what is really an unscientific post-voting poll sound like actual voting statistics.

If I had my way, the results of voting (in the national races) would be prohibited from being released until the last voting place in Hawaii has closed.

Also, there is some question about how this process is currently defined in the law.  Some claim that it is actually contrary to law.  I'll let someone else address that one.

Long lines on election day is an easily solvable problem!

Pauls:

Sice you asked. First the Constitution mandates that the elction shall be the FIRST Tuesday after the First Monday of November. Secondly a lot of information can come out between the an early vote and the actual election. Fpr instance, I guarantee there were more than a few oh, ohs muttered in Pennsylvania by those who voted early and THGEN heard the interview relative Obama and the Coal industry. But it's too late, you cast your die early and you have to live with it. I never have and never will vote before the appointed time.

BTW Done and Done
