Help!!! I cannot watch DVD/AVI on my new systems |

I am hoping someone out there can help me with my problem. After the burglary I have replaced my computers and both the desktop and the lap top have arrived with Windows Vista installed. Now, for most things this is not a problem but now I cannot watch my movies or avi files on either. I get sound but no picture. Any ideas as to what I can do to fix this?
Both machines have DVD players and I would have assumed that they could, therefore, play DVDs but it would appear not and I have several episodes of the new seasons of Stargate Atlantis, Heroes and Supernatural to watch and I am suffering with no medium on whcih to play them at home. | | | <---------Mithrandir, Laverne and Shirley

| | Posted: | | | | A DVD player software should be sufficient to watch DVDs on your computer. It should install the necessary codec. As for AVI (DivX?) you'll need the DivX codec. You can download it from here. (Make sure that you uncheck the Yahoo toolbar during the install if you don't want it). | | | Karsten

| | Posted: | | | | Not to sure about Vista, still use an XP machine here, but it sounds like a codecs issue. You could try VLC Media Player if its a video problem. that plays most available media content, including down-loaded items from itunes etc. Steve |

| | Posted: | | | | My newer Vista CPU has a "play anything drive", yet I still had to go and install new codecs when I popped a BluRay from the library in it the other day. Thankfully after a couple minutes it was playing fine. I also had to install the Divx codec right out of the box. It's supposed to be Home Premium. |
