from VideoETA...

When you think of Marvel Comics movies these days, successful films such as Spider-Man and Iron Man ("Man" I think I'm finally seeing a trend here) instantly spring to mind. But before these modern-day blockbusters, there was a Marvel Comics adaptation that literally set Marvel film adaptations back 15 years.

No, really. It took 15 years for the next Marvel Comics movie to see the light of day.

That film was of course, Howard the Duck. A film executive produced by George Lucas himself and destined for success only to bomb mercilessly for critics and audiences alike. But, the film's legacy has lived on mostly among those young children (like myself) who saw it with wide-eyed wonder and helped to propel it to a cult-like status.

Well for us, the day that we have long been waiting for has arrived. Howard the Duck will debut on DVD on March 10, 2009. The movie, which has been available in other parts of the world is finally coming home to the United States on a special edition DVD.

The special features include:

    * A Look Back at Howard the Duck
    * Releasing the Duck
    * News Featurette
    * The Stunts of Howard the Duck
    * The Special Effects of Howard the Duck
    * The Music of Howard the Duck
    * Teaser Trailer

The suggested retail price is $14.98 and as yet, there is no Blu-ray version planned. I guess we can't be choosy, after all it's taken 22 years for it to see the light of day on DVD. I just hope that it doesn't take another 22 years before we see a Blu-ray version.

(DVDEmpire has it up for preorder for $9.99!)
*Edit to correct the year...this is what happens when you simply copy & paste an article!

Well that calls for a celebration of song and dance..

In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. Now the World is weird and People take Prozac to make it Normal.

I...LOVE...THIS...MOVIE!
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

I made some money off Howard the Duck... long before the film. Howard was a short (8-page?) feature in Marvel's Man-Thing comic book and most comic readers found him to be great. When they announced a HtD comic book, I ordered 100 (at 35 cents each). Well, when the dealer returned with the books that Tuesday, he was given far fewer than he ordered, so I (like everyone else who preordered) received fewer than half what I asked for. But it turns out that not only had Marvel way underestimated the desire for the book, but way underestimated the idiots like me who would speculate on it (this was the one and only time I bought more than three copies of anything).

None reached either dealers' shelves nor any non-dealer rack. Essentially none of the first three HtD comics every were sold from any store shelf. All were pre-ordered by speculators. By issue four, Marvel had increased the print run, and the pre-order demaned had waned to a point where most were sold like a typical comic book.

So here I had four dozen pristine issues of Howard the Duck #1, a dozen of #2, and more than a half dozen of #3. I, too, stopped buying more than two after #3 (one to read, one to store).

A few months later the Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide came out (only one a year back then), and listed Howard the Duck at $15.00 for issues #1 and #3, and $10.00 for #2.

I sold all but three of each I had.

Within a couple weeks no one could get more than a buck or two for any issue, because we all had flooded the market. I doubt that even today you'd have to pay $15 for a mint copy of #1 (maybe #3).

Yeah, I was very disappointed in the movie. No, I won't buy a copy of the DVD. I doubt anyone will give me a copy.
If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.
