I am mostly using mine for horror sub-genres... but have a few others as well.

Horror Sub-genres:
- Aliens
- Ghosts/Hauntings
- Vampires
- Slasher/Serial Killers
- Psychological Horror
- Demons
- Animal Horror
- Comedy Horror
- Action Horror
- Witches
- Mummy
- Anthology
- Cults
- Werewolves
- Zombies
- Cannibalism

Other:
- Movie Serials
- TV Miniseries
- TV Movies
- Christmas
- Superheroes
- Silent
- Short Stories
- Stand Up Comedy

Then I am always prepared to add more as the titles I get dictates.

I like a couple of your ideas... though if I am not mistaken... wasn't Disaster added to the main genre list?

Correct, Disaster is in the main list.

As for which to have, that's very, very subjective. Very few people would agree on genres hence most of those in the main list aren't very specific - Horror Vs. Slasher Horror, etc...

Oops! Right you are, already there in the main list, so I removed it from my original post

Yes, it's extremely subjective, but we can share ideas.

I probably shouldn't even bring it up as I want to see it abolished, but it seems that everyone loves the "torture porn" moniker for any newer horror flick involving traps or imprisonment.
Let's just bury it, or at least shorten it to "ToPo"!

I haven't really done a lot with the custom genres field at the moment. I do, and only would ever use this as a search tool to find a specific group of movies, that I would want to choose one from to watch.

I think people in general put too much faith in genres, labelling films as this and that (just check out the recent forum debate on whether 'Alien' is a horror or a Sci-Fi  ). Genres, like most other things are extremely subjective and a film can be anything the viewer interprets it as, which isn't necessarily agreed on by everyone else.

The only custom genre I have devised so far is Giallo, to distinguish these films from the often overly used 'Suspense/Thriller' label, which is way too ambiguous for me... around half of my collection gets brought up if I filter by that!

I have to say though, reading some of Pete's and Enry's ideas that it has inspired me to create more custom genres so I can choose a movie to watch much more easily by filtering by a desired custom genre...

... so thanks to both!

I haven't done anything with custom genres yet. but as an idea, since you have Comics Adaptation what about a Video Game Adaptation (Resident Evil, Silent Hill, etc) of course if you don't have any that fit into the category no need (yet)

I'm still using tags for this atm because AFAIK genres still can't be bulk edited without the use of a plugin??

Anyway, I only have a few and there aren't many profiles assigned to them either (been a bit lazy with them  ):

Comic Adap
Desert
Cult Classic
Road Movie
Standup
Zompie
Vampire

I'll be adding a few of the ones suggested here for sure, Video Game Adap in particular could be useful.

Lots of good ideas!

Also:

Cops
Detective
Spaghetti
Teen
Road Movie
Black&White

One more thing: I add a blank space before the name of the custom genre, so they are all listed in a group before the main genres (in the drop-down window in Edit Profile).

The only custom genre I'm currently using is Performing Arts (for Cats, and the ballet and opera in my collection), outside of anime genres ...

which probably won't help if you don't have a lot of anime (admittedly, some are not true genres but actually demographics, but they still convey content information to me):
-- Josei
-- Hentai
-- Mecha
-- Seinen
-- Shoujo
-- Shounen
-- Yaoi
