I think it's time I checkied out a Bollywood film or two    I know there's a massive range of them but can anyone recommend any that would suit a newbie such as myself?  The only experience I've had of them has been when I've been ordering my kebab on a Friday night, but I've enjoyed what I've seen.

In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. Now the World is weird and People take Prozac to make it Normal.

You can get your feet wet with directors Mira Nair (Monsoon Wedding, Kama Sutra) and Gurinder Chadha (Bride & Prejudice, Bend It Like Beckham) (English-Bollywood flavored...) and then dive in with Straight from the Heart (with Aishwarya Rai, who was in Bride & Prejudice), Lagaan (scored by A.R. Rahman, composer for Slumdog Millionaire), or Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (big budget and high grosses).

Since you have E.T. - The Extra Terrestrial in your collection, you might consider watching Koi... Mil Gaya (I've Found Someone). It had a US release, but that seems to have been discontinued. It has many similarities to E.T. in themes and overall tone, yet still retains mild Bollywood trimmings.

Asoka is a cheap buy and readily available in any DVD shop in the UK. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I would go with "Lagaan" or "Monsoon Wedding" for pure Bollywood and "East is East" or "Bend it Like Beckham" for not so pure westernised but good anyway!

Thanks for all the suggestions, I'll be sure to check them out.

East is East is a great film, as you say not proper bollywood but still a great film.

Having only seen some of the British Indian movies like
Bend It Like Beckham and
Nina's Heavenly Delights,
I recently came in contact with real Bollywood movies.

It started with Krrish, which is a Bollywood superhero movie.
Having enjoyed it, I have now watched Koi... Mil Gaya (which Krrish is a sequel to), which is equally good.
Yesterday I have ordered Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai and
Fire, and have put
Bride And Prejudice,
Indian Love Story - Kal Ho Naa Ho,
Kuch Naa Kaho and
Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham
on my wishlist.
