Maybe now a Pixar film might finally got a nod in the right category. Interesting but i'll bet Pixar won't get a nomination so long as there is an Animated Best Picture category | | | Bad movie? You're soaking in it! | | | Last edited: by tweeter |

I think you can look at it in a more positive way too: not only does it probably increase box office for those marginal performers, as you said; the other side of the coin is that it also spreads the public attention from a couple of "main contenders" partly to other good performers that deserve more attention, but maybe wouldn't have made it to the list of only 5 nominees. But, admittedly, it requires a very good movie year to justify 10 real contenders. | | | Mika I hate people who love me, and they hate me. (Bender Bending Rodriguez) |

| Posted: | | | | Another interesting issue is that best picture is so often linked to best director, and they aren't expanding that field. |

| Posted: | | | | There is only one reason for a move like this... money.
This allows them to 'nominate' some of the popular films that have absolutely no chance of actually winning. This will allow these films to be advertised as Oscar nominees, potentially increasing box office revenue or DVD/BD sales. It will also potentially help renew interest in the award show itself if people want to hold out hope that their favorite film might win.
So, while UP might get a nomination this year because of this change, I expect it's chance of actually winning the Best Picture award is no better than it ever was. |

| Posted: | | | | Well this morning on the news they said that one reason is because people were upset that The Dark Knight wasn't nominated for Best Picture and this is supposed to prevent this from happening in the future to other movies. I also like jgilligan's reason as well. | | | We're on a mission from God.

Actually, I am (retroactively) upset that "Rachel Getting Married" wasn't nominated, because THAT was last year's best film. The Dark Knight? Ledger was great and he did win. I won't comment on the rest of the movie. Roger Ebert wrote that the expansion may not necessarly cause more mainstream nominees, but result in a more fragmented voting result, and therefore increasing the chances for a major studio picture to win. | | | Matthias |
