Price? Preferred brand? display size (Big screen 17" & up / portable 15" vs ultra portable 13" and down)

Cheap -> HP, i'm hoping i get the money for that one: http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4660 Cheap, portable, fairly good and has fingerprint and HDMI connector.

Expensive -> Sony or HP EliteBook

Well, I want something wih a blu-ray drive. I want to replace my desktop. I have a 1080p 22" Samsung monitor for the desktop that I would hook into the laptop when I am not on the go.

Don't want to spend $2k, but in the neighborhood of $1k to $1500 is alright.

Probably either Dell ot HP no real preference.

Generally you can't really go wrong with Sony Vaio or Toshiba Qosmio

Edited by myself, because questions were already answered.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

I purchased a HP DV5t notebook last year and would recommend it to others

Basic specs of what I bought which might also suit you:

Centrino2
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.53
NVidia 9600GT Graphics Card with 512MB of dedicated memory
BluRay Rom
Digital TV Tuner
320GB HDD
15.4" Widescreen
4GB Ram

It comes with HDMI out and two remotes and makes a decent Media Center PC.

Useful reviews here.

HP HDX 18t

18,4" Full HD display (1920 x 1080) optical blu-ray (not a burner). Specs are somewhat average, price here is 1300€ so there its probably also 1300$ or cheaper.

Link

Though its not really a portable computer, more like movable computer (8.82 lbs)

have a Vaio FW 285. It was great at first, but the construction is really flimsy. It's all banged up and I haven't done anything except carry it in a heavily padded backpack. Also, I have yet to get the HDMi to work. In retrospect, I wish I'd bought the HP I was looking at instead.

Intresting, ive always thought Sonys were well built, since they use better case materials etc.

Good rule of thumb is to never buy a laptop which has less than 3 years warranty.

Have a PCG-K-315S which has seen it's best days now. But all there is are a few scratches on the lid.
It has gone through some travels with me the only severe fault is the failure of a fan (last week) But since it's almost 5 years old now that is OK for me (repair gave me a hard time though, I had to disassemble the whole machine).

If money isn't an option, see if you can get one with a solid state drive.  Not only are they blazing fast, they have a smaller energy footprint over a mechanical drive.

If you plan on using it on the go a large amount of time, go with a smaller size (15"). I bought a 17.5 wide screen, thinking wow, I'll love this big screen and it is often cumbersome on the lap. You have to be careful with air flow, which my Fujitsu has intakes on the bottom, making it NOT really a laptop. It does everything I want it to quite well, but if I had to do it over again (read: my next laptop) I'll go with a smaller model.

I used to sell computers for a living and I would say Toshiba.  You cannot go wrong with them.  What are you using it for and what price ranger are you looking to stay in?

In my experience theres not a lot of software that can properly use quad core processors, so most programs are stuck with a 1,6 GHz single core processor. Id personally rather get a 3 GHz dual core processor. But I'm no expert on processors, and have no experience how well Windows 7 handles quad core processors.

EDIT: Found this article that i think you should read:
http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/000942.html

Its from 2007, so no idea how things have improved since.

I'm looking at a couple of Dell's myself, but haven't decided yet between 2 similar systems.  I'm trying to stay under $700-750.  Any feedback on these 2 laptops?

Inspiron 15 (Black Friday Deal)
• Intel Core 2 Duo T6600 (2.20GHz/800Mhz FSB/2MB cache)
• Windows 7 Home Premium, 64bit
• 3GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 at 800MHz
• 320GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM)
• Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X4500HD
• High Definition Audio 2.0
• Bright, glossy widescreen 15.6 WLED display (1366x768)

• Dell Wireless 1397 802.11g Half Mini-Card
• No webcam

• 4GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 at 800MHz ($35)
• 256MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD4330 ($100)
• Soundblaster X-Fi Hi Def Audio - Software Enabled ($25)
• Integrated 1.3MP Webcam ($25)
