I use Hirescovers.net to replace DVD, Blu-ray images in DVD Profiler. I replace the cover for Training Day the cover doesn't say Blu-ray on it. However DVD Profiler slap a big Blu-ray logo banner at the top of it. Is this a new feature?

I have two databases one for DVD's and one for Blu-ray. I found the option to disable it.

Randall:

Just a word of advice. Custom Covers are ILLEGAL, which is why Profiler does not allow them to be Contributed, I don't know what the potential legal ramifications are to folks like yourself, but based on the past, your sites days are numbered. Hollywood takes a very dim view of these kind of sites and has shut many of them down in the past and i am sure they will at some point file a cease and desist under against this one as well.

Where did Randall mention "Custom" covers, Skip ?

If I read his post correct he just takes scanned covers from a site that offers Hires scans of the original covers.
Nothing wrong with that

replace DVD, Blu-ray images indicates to me that he using custom images and i have viewed the site and they have MANY custom covers in addition to just some scanned full covers, which may also violate the Copyright law, this why we don't do spines, Donnie. Also since he discussed specifically Traning Day and that they don't include the banner, that is their choice, Profiler chose to make the banner optional, we view it as part of the cover and Ken made the banner part of the software to create consistency since we early on discovered that image consistency of the banner was problematic. But he also made the banner usage completely optional, the user CAN turn it off if he doesn't want it. The problem that the site has is that they are not only using Custom covers which will upset Hollywood, they are charging for the privilege of downloading material which they do not own the Copyright for. Like i said, the clock is ticking on that site and they will ultimately be shut down...just like the others. They not only post Custom Covers but Custom Disc Art as well, whoooeeee are they in trouble.

But, especially after reviewing the site, i felt like he was discussing something beyond just the optional switch for the banner.

I use them for my personal pleasure. Not to upload to any database.

Makes no difference, Randall, the site is completely illegal. They charge you to downloadd art which they do not OWN nor does the cover creator.

Add the slipcover flag to the profile and it won't display the blu-ray banner.  (Or is it remove the flag?)

If you visit the site, which I did, you will find that they "have custom DVD cover art, custom DVD labels, movie posters, covers for HD-DVD and Blu Ray, movie screenshots, custom game console covers and labels."  They are a cutsom cover site.  I have seen quite a few of them.  A lot have been shut down, but they just pop back up under different names.

For the record

hirescovers.net has been referred to the MPAA for action. I was concerned when I noted both Custom Art and Custom Disc Art for Training Day, but when I discovered both Custom Cover art and Disc Art for titles which have not even been announced for DVD release yet, that was TOO MUCH. That they can't even claim mea culpa on.

They never did anything about the copy dvd I got from Amazon so I doubt they will do anything. They will have to shut down the whole net.

No one told you to use the site by the way if people scan front and back covers for blu-ray disc in to dvd profile I wouldn't have to go looking for better covers.

I wouldn't have to copy from IMDB if the database had the information listed also.

Not sure why he reported them to the MPAA.  If it were me, I would have reported them to the studios who own the artwork involved...and, no, they won't have to shut down the whole net.  I have seen quite a few of these sites shut down, fined and sued.

You don't have to go looking for better covers.  That is a choice you are making.  You do have another choice...scan them in yourself.

You don't have to copy from IMDb.  That is a choice you are making.  You do have another choice...enter the data yourself and contribute it so that the rest of the community may benefit.  Granted, that isn't as easy as taking the data from IMDb, but it is an option.

I do understand that nobody has to contribute data, but it just rubs me the wrong way when someone, who isn't willing to do the work, complains about the fact that others haven't done the work either.

Randall:

Your excuses don't fly. You don't have to do ANYTHING, you make the choices. You could make the choice to go buy a scanner and learn how to create your images which doesn't violate the law, as long as you follow our rules, you could always go to the movie and provide the data from the film instead of illegally copying data from another website. You havemade a personal choice to violate the law, icluding payiong for material which is not owned by the seller (namely the artwork). I know how the MPAA works, so I don't expect any action immediately, but there will be action.
