Apparently, NASA erased the original recordings and are restoring the TV broadcast footage. What is worse is that there was a second set of original recordings that were recording by us (Australians) at Parkes in New South Wales, Australia that we sent to NASA that they have lost as well. It never ceases to amaze me how careless broadcasting organisations deal with such historic recordings. Here the tapes of the original broadcast of the moon landing were erased as well. Fortunately recently some recordings of that broadcast were found in the attic of some hobbyist who had recorded it back then. | | | | Last edited: by dee1959jay |

Essentially, NASA was totally focused on the science end of it and as engineers were totally oblivious to historical importance and public relations. This is also seen in the fact that on Apollo 11 they put the camera on Neil Armstrong and not on Buzz Aldrin, so we have lots of photos of Buzz on the moon but only two very poor ones of Neil Armstrong on the moon. | | | | "This movie has warped my fragile little mind." |

In order to keep sane I have to believe that they were just pulling old tapes for reuse and didn't realize what it was they were overwriting.
