Gift Sets (For instance the Iron Man best buy exclusive with the head) 6. Disney Classics 7. Criterion Collection 8. Promotional Discs (I know most people don't care about these because they are free, but they are time limited) 9. Having multiple formats, i.e DVD, Blu Ray, HD DVD
For me it is a combination of all of theses things. I have not decided which order they go in yetbut if I do I will post them in order. |

You can have all the fancy packaging, the latest tech, an insane number of disc, etc. But I'm most impressed with a solid collection that someone enjoys watching over and over. It's even more impressive if they're movies I'd enjoy. I think avoiding a movie because X people own it is absurd. I don't care if my tastes are mainstream or not. I only care if it's something I want to own. I don't understand letting others dictate what I should or should not like. Whether that means buying what everyone else buys or not buying what everyone else buys. I also agree that that behavior is just another form of going mainstream. | Posted: | | | | I could care less if someone is or isn't impressed with my collection. I have lots of rare stuff, other regions, fancy packages and all that, but all were bought by me because I liked them or thought it was cool in packaging cases. I have to admit that I do get a little extra kick watching my super-rare discs. Just knowing that most can't makes me feel a little bit better inside. |

| Posted: | | | | Gladiator is fabulous, so's Braveheart. Was going to replace my DVD's with Blu Rays, not sure now though. Don't want to be mainstream... I'll let the majority decide if I should be mainstream or not. |

It's certainly true though. Some of the more important newspapers in Germany have their own line of DVDS (critics choice if you want). You can buy full boxsets of these. The releases are at least as expensive as the standard release, but lack any extras. Still a lot of people buy them. Why? Because they put them on the shelf to show how intellectual they are, just like they do with the literary classics. Similar behavior can be seen among younger buyers. They need to have what everyone else in their class (or similar) has. And I agree, the more stuff you own that I don't see in every other collection the more interesting it is. I also prefer collections that are spread among different types of movies, whereas I dislike collections too heavily focused on something (splatter, martial arts, etc.) | | | - Jan |
