| Posted: | | | | Does anyone own, or have seen, the various releases of The Searchers?
I want to pick up a copy of the film for my collection - but I am torn as to which one to get. As I understand it, the original DVD release from 1997 has good color while the 2006 release is washed out color wise, but the 1997 has worse cropping than the 2006.
I don't have a blu or HD player, so picking up the film in either of those formats would not work.
At any rate, I was wondering if anyone has seen both DVD versions and would recommend one over the other. | | | If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world. -- Thorin Oakenshield |

| Posted: | | | | I looked at the comparison on dvdbeaver - the color, especially the blues, looked much better on the 1997 release, but the film was cropped significantly when compared to the 2006. But I'm torn as to which is more significant... | | | If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world. -- Thorin Oakenshield |

| Posted: | | | | Are you sure it's not the other way around? ... the color of the blue in the sky in the interior matches the color as shown at dvdbeaver for the 1997 release, as does the cropping ... so the outer should be the 2006, the interior the 1997, at least if the dvdbeaver comparison is at all correct | | | If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world. -- Thorin Oakenshield |

| Posted: | | | | That image does, if nothing else, show up the difference between the two.
See, there's quite a bit of cropping difference between the two releases. But the blue in the sky is just absolutely beautiful in the interior, while it looks very grey and dark in the other. But the panorama is larger...
See, that's why/what I'm torn on. | | | If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world. -- Thorin Oakenshield |

| Posted: | | | | Can't speak to the '97 release, but the '06 had some of the nastiest EE I can remember seeing. You get a nice hint of it on that leftmost rock formation as it meets the sky. |

| Posted: | | | | Like i said I prefer the '06 DVD. But I will say this based on Beaver's review of the BD-version, it looks like it has some genuine promise.
One thing that I note with the Searchers is that on the three image sets we have three radically different versions of film in nearly every aspect of picture quality. The only reason I mention it, and I don't mean to digress or get into a controversial topic, it reminds me of the our own issues sometimes with images. I find the '06 DVD to be the best balanced color-wise of the three images. Howare we to know, typically witjh MOST restorations we can't unless th original filmmakers were involved, or left detailed production notes, neither of these are very likely most of the time. It also reminds me a bit of the Disney Animation Dept and how relatively easy their restorations are with respect to color. One of the things that Walt instituted right from the very beginnings of his color animation was detailed information as to precisely what colors were used and how they were compiled. This gives a fine baseline to work from, THIS is the yellow in Snow Whites dress in this scene, makes life a good bit easier. These colors are used by contemporary animators should they find they have to do something with a Disney character such as Bambi II.
Sorry to digress and ruminate.

| Posted: | | | | I have the Blu-ray. I hadn't seen the movie previously and wondered if it was supposed to look like that. I chalked it up to 1950s Technicolor. Apparently, this wasn't their fault. |

Apparently, this wasn't their fault. According to Ned Price Vice President of Mastering, Warner Bros. Technical Operations 'quote': People have to remember that Searchers is not a Technicolor three-strip film. This is 1956 single strip EK film, which had very poor color reproduction capability. Technicolor dye transfer release printing process salvaged quite a few of these early single-strip films by printing three-strip units from the EK and re-coloring them, so to speak. | | | In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. Skip Interesting digression. It also makes some of Disney's latest...ummm, reinterpretations for lack of a better word, of their classic cartoons even more difficult to understand. The golden Peter Pan produced in this last go-around is particularly odd. |
