| Posted: | | | | So, I saw this in a store today, and was wondering if anyone had watched this before? I'm wondering if it's worth the watch/investment as it's a bit pricey, but it looks kind of cute. I'm not a huge fan of anime--slowly getting into it via Hayao Miyazaki's work and really haven't watched much else. I like his a lot (esp. Howl's Moving Castle) and wonder what else is out there...don't want to get into the Naruto/DragonBall Z/Inuyasha type, fighting, all half naked girls type, if that makes sense. I see that it is part of a longer series...in general, if I do get into this series, is it likely they'll keep on releasing them until they are finished or is it likely that they may stop putting them out half way through? Thanks for any and all feedback, I really shouldn't be getting into another series, but...oh well! lol. | | | Lori |

| Posted: | | | | I've neither seen nor heard of it previously, but if your route into anime if Miyazaki I'd be wary of this. Anime tends to fall into one of a number of groups and I this one is a long way from Miyazaki. This anime falls into the 'shounen' category, described on anidb.com as: Quote: A style of anime and manga intended for boys, characterized by high-action, often humorous plots featuring male protagonists. The camaraderie between boys or men on sports teams, fighting squads, etc. is often emphasized. Unrealistically attractive female characters are also common (see fanservice), but are not a requirement. The art style of shounen also tends to be less flowery than that of shoujo. Try these websites to look for other anime with similar categorisations to get an idea: http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=4917http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=7490I think that I'd be more inclined to recommend one of the tried and tested classics in this genre, such as the Tenchi Muyo Rhi-Ohki OAVs (013023-017498) or El Hazard OAVs. Of course, you want other opinions, but that's my first impression. Stuart | | | This is a sig... ... ... yay...

| Posted: | | | | Here's the official website of this series, called Hayate no Gotoku in Japan: http://hayatenogotoku.com/Be forwarned that it's a series aimed at otaku, so you know you risk destroying your social life just by looking at it. Actually, it's funny you should mention series like Dragon Ball and Inuyasha, because these tend to be the 'socially acceptable' series in girls' eyes whereas series like Hayate no Gotoku tend to be labelled as Otaku territory. If you like Miyazaki's works, I don't think you'll find the same magic or style in Hayate no Gotoku. I believe (personal opinion) that you would be better off then with OAV's like PaprikaSkycrawlersToki o kakeru shoujoByousoku 5 centimer( photogalery) Brave Storyetc Going by the titles you've mentioned, I would divide them into 3 groups: - anime mass produced for children/adolescents : Dragon Ball, Inuyasha, Naruto, Yuyu Hakusho, etc - anime mass produced for otaku (I tend to avoid like the plague) : Hayate no Gotoku, K-On, etc - anime produced as an art-form with attention to details and a deeper story adults and children can enjoy : every Miyazaki / Studio Ghibli work, the titles I've suggested (Paprika, etc) To each his own of course and that's just my opinion, but it might be worth to first look into things a bit more, click some links, before deciding in which anime to invest. | | | Blu-ray collection DVD collection My Games My Trophies | | | Last edited: by Taro |

| Posted: | | | | Social life? What's that? *grins*
Good to know about Combat Butler, though...maybe not what I'm looking for, it seems. Thanks for the links.
Hmm, I was looking at Sky Crawlers too, so maybe I'll lean that way instead...
Yeah, I'm trying to stay away from the kiddy stuff and the violent kind (I don't mind violence to a point, but I don't like it when that's all there is and that's the whole point of the show, if that makes sense. A lot of anime I've come across seem to have that with exactly that as a plot point) as well as the kind that is filled with half naked women (half naked guys, I wouldn't mind-lol).
I've only read a few manga, would have read more because of plots, but really don't like the style (I don't read graphic novels or comic books b/c of that too, so not meaning the Japanese format, but more the short blurb format), so don't really have a base to go off of to find movies/video of it.
Wouldn't mind serialized at all, but just am looking for something fun and well done. I appreciate all the suggestions! | | | Lori |

| Posted: | | | | Oh, I forgot, there's a 720p trailer for Byousoku 5 centimeter. It seems like a nicely done OAV, a collection of short stories in anime format. I have it on my Blu-ray wish list: http://5cm.yahoo.co.jp/teaser/index.htmlJust right click on the link that says "8M(1280×720)" and select save as to save it on your hard disk. If you like something serialized, non-violent, love-story with comedy elements, then I can wholeheartedly recommend Maison Ikkoku, a classic by Takahashi Rumiko (the author of among others Ranma 1/2) : The story is about a young widow, who tries to continue her life without her husband as the owner of a small pension. All the tenants are rather whacky except for one young man, a beginning shool teacher. Little by little a romance develops between them, with funny complications: Opening themeA drama series was made out of it as well: http://www.tv-asahi.co.jp/ikkokukan/My wife used to love that series when she was a little girl and to this day still likes it. | | | Blu-ray collection DVD collection My Games My Trophies | | | Last edited: by Taro |

| Posted: | | | | Hmm, looks like Byousoku 5 centimeter might be out of print...it looks good, but maybe a little melancholy for my tastes right now. Maison Ikkoku looks to be more my tastes, but I'll have to look around and see if I can find it a little cheaper...unfortunately, don't have that much to spare right now on a dvd set...spent it last month on the deepdiscount sale. I'll definitely keep my eyes out for it though. Have you heard about Kamichu! at all? Thanks for the hints! | | | Lori |
