I am shopping around for a new gaming PC and came across CybertronPC.  They seem to have decent systems, at a reasonable price, so I am wondering if anybody had heard of them.

Thanks in advance.

Unicus in that price range check out the Gateway FX.  It is less expensive than most gaming machines.  Mine is 18 moths old now and has preformed flawlessly.

As Lord said, you get too little for the price.

They are using Foxconn or MSI mainboards for gaming machines. That's like giving your old Pinto a racing outfit to make it feel faster.
I don't know how it is in the US but here these two manufacturers are mostly available in the low to medium-budget sector. At least the CPUs are about two generations behind (E5200!) the least you should take for a gaming machine is an E-8400 (stepping E0), since not many games support MPUs I would not recommend a QuadCore CPU, but this is strongly depending on what else you're planning to do with this machine.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

I have to agree. The best gaming computers I know of are Alienware, they make some real kick-butt hardware with solid components.

I play one game, World of Warcraft, and my kids play Spore and Zoo Tycoon 2.  So, while I know that Alienware is the best, I just can't justify paying the premium price tag that goes along with the name.

Yeah, we all dream of Alienware.........

I suppose the fundamental question is "What is your budget?". i.e. what are you comfortable with paying/resigned to paying/can justify to She-who-must-be-obeyed    etc. etc.

And is that budget for a complete package (monitor/keyboard/mouse/speakers etc.), or can you salvage older peripherals?

Have you considered building your own?

You can do a lot with a decent video card.  Check out the nVidia GTX 2xx series.  I'm running dual GTX295's in Quad-SLI mode and it's sweeeeeeeeet.

I am looking at, about, $1000 or less.  I am not a hard core gamer, so I don't need a monster of a system.  I have been using a Dell Inspiron 9600 laptop...go SG Atlantis...for the last 4 years, so just about anything is going to be an upgrade.

Look at putting in 2-4 GB of RAM, no more than 4 MB if you're on a 32bit system.  Pick out a good video card and then put the rest into a CPU and MB.  You can put together a decent gaming system for a grand if you're only upgrading those three items.

But if you're going for gaming, you'll want to put in for a good video card.  Most modern games do the vast majority of the screen rendering on the video card and not in the CPU.

Check out this Summer 2009 buyer's guide that gives you entry, intermediate, and extreme gaming builds...  FiringSquad.com

With this guide you can build a decent gaming rig under $1000, heck around $500 if you have some parts in place!!!

And don't forget a massive power supply.  Decent video cards are huge power hogs, and if you have way more power than you need it'll be easier to upgrade the video card in the future.

But it all starts with a decent case.
Big enough for highend graphic cards (if the case is too small they end up in the HDD-cage).
