ARGHHHH!!!    What happened was I was working on the cast and crew data for CSI (Season 9) and anyone who has done these from scratch, you know how much time they take. Well, anyway I had gotten up to episode 16 when I downloaded a new updated which included a new update (that I had contributed to add insult to injury) for that profile, meaning it wiped out my work. Luckily, I had uploaded my collection but only up to episode 10 which means I have to do those 6 episodes AGAIN along with the countless supporting role names I had also filled in.

My own fault for not locking in them but I had to vent a little.

Well, guess tomorrow I'll do those 6 over meaning another hour of watching those damn credits and adding each one.

Oh, I know.

After doing 16 episodes, I know I can copy and paste certain crew members (creator, producers, composer, production designer, art director, make-up effects, visual effects) so that will cut the time down a little as those never changed (though I'll only do it up to episode 16 just in case something changes during eps 17-24).

I understand your frustration. It happened to me once before.

One tip:
- as Skip said, backup often
- also, when I start working on updates on a profile, first thing I do is lock that part of the profile. That way, I'm sure my work won't accidentally be overwritten from updates

I understand.  It has happen to me.  And yes building the cast/crew is a lot of work.  I vote yes if that helps you feel any better.

One reason I like using Goodguy's Credits Editor is that I can save the cast/crew as an Excell file (or the data in XML format.  That way, I have the data off line so to speak and don't have to worry about losing all my work by inadvertently downloading a profile from the main database.

If I didn't have Excel (which Goodguy's editor uses) I would use Tom Gains Cast & Crew editor to do the same thing.

I recommend using either of these two tools instead of doing cast/crew credits within Profiler.  Even though you can now cut and paste within the Profiler program, you still can have your work "go away" with a single update -- and you won't have any way to recover it short of recovering an earlier profile from your last Backup.  But you may not have done a backup between the time you buiilt those long cast/crew lists and overwrote the profile with an update.  If you had the data formatted outside of Profiler (as an Excel or XML file) you could easily replace the data you lost in the program.

Fortunately I got it all done. In the future, the first thing I will do before working on TV series credits is lock the cast and crew parts and then back it up. Luckily it was not the entire thing, i would've been pissed, lol.

I feel your pain Movieman.  I have done many a cast/crew contibution, and have done the same thing.  All the hard work *poof* gone.  I now do as Skip said: Backup after every 2 or so contribs.

Eric
My one wish for the DVD Profiler online database: Ban or remove the disc-level profiles of TV season sets. It completely screws up/inflates the CLT.
FACT: Imdb is WRONG 70% of the time! Misspelled cast, incomplete cast, wrong cast/crew roles. So for those who want DVD Profiler to be "as perfect as Imdb", good luck with that.
Stop adding UNIT crew! They're invalid credits. Stop it!
