| | Posted: | | | | I currently have my movies organized alphabetically by title/series (Batman movies under B in chronological order). I'm currently debating on whether to have numbered titles (2001, 12 monkeys, 30 days of nights) in alphabetical or numerical order (preceeding alphabetical titles). Any comments on pros and cons? If you go by numerical order, does it make any sense to put 2001 ahead of 30 days of nights (going by 1st number)? | | | | My Home Theater |

But in the sort title field, I use a 9-character number for every number, so '9 to 5' is entered as '000000009 to 5'; '2001' is entered '000002001'; '10 Million Years B.C.' would be '010000000 Million years B.C.'; etc.

| | Posted: | | | | I change the sort title to spell the title in words. "2001: A Space Odyssey" > "Two Thousand One: A Space Odyssey" Using this method, titles appear in my collection as they would in a book like Leonard Maltin's guide, for example. It's also how I find them in stores.

(I just noticed that you filed First Knight under 1st Knight, so that answers my question) Yeah I went that way because sometimes the same title is spelled as number and sometimes as text so I decided to file any title that starts with a number (digit or otherwise) as number. I also transcribe german umlauts into their alternate spelling because if I wouldn't transcribe "Ölprinz" into "Oelprinz", DVDP would sort it after Z. | | | Karsten

Karsten: I bought my copy of First Knight in Kiel, Germany.
It's German name is "Der 1. Ritter", could that be the reason of using "1" and not "F(irst)" ?
Or do you convert every text-based numeral to numbers?

Answered! OK.  My reason for this is the same argument I use in the "title rule" discussion. I am simply not able (and don't want to) to memorize every cover of my DVDs. So when I think about "First Knight" (or as you correctly put it "Der 1. Ritter" in german) I don't want to think about how the cover might have spelled the "1". So, in order to find this title, I eitehr sort by title and look where I would look for any numbered title or I substring filter for "ritter". | | | Karsten

So 2 Million Minutes would be sorted as 0002 Million Minutes. It makes more sense to my brain to sort: - in this order: 101 Dalmatians, 300, 1408 - rather than: 101 Dalmatians, 1408, 300 I know that isn't the standard, but it makes more sense in my brain.  As far as titles like Ninth Gate, I sort those by the word. I don't covert Ninth to 9th. | | | If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.

In the end it's again a matter of personal preferences, the only thing of importance is that you are able to find the titles where you would expect them. | | | It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
