| Posted: | | | | I grew up just south of San Francisco, and being a teenager in the 1960s was amazing. I played guitar and bass in a number of bands, headlining at Marty Balin's Matrix, opening for Muddy Waters, Moby Grape, The Byrds, Jefferson Airplane, the Grateful Dead (Bobby was a neighbor of mine), Quicksilver Messenger Service and others at Fillmore Auditorium and Winterland, and for a few other well-known acts at Avalon Ballroom and elsewhere. Often, when I was a member of the audience at a performance by Chuck Berry or Steve Miller or others, I would chat with a young harmonica player from the East Bay area, Norton Buffalo. He achieved far more success playing music than I, mainly because he had an amazing amount of talent and dedication.
We've continued to trade CDs of our bands over the decades, and I saw him every year when he performed with the Christmas Jug Band (and occasionally with his own band and with Steve Miller or Roy Rogers). After he returned home from a nationwide tour this August, he checked into his local hospital with pneumonia Sept. 1st. On Sept. 2nd, it was discovered that his illness was caused by a stage 4 Adenocarcinoma of the lower right lobe. The next day, he found out that it had spread to his brain. He sought out many traditional and nontraditional cures. He lost his battle yesterday.
He was in a few films, and helped score a couple. He did a cameo appearance in the rock movie, "The Rose" starring Bette Midler, where he was a member of the band (on harmonica and trombone) and spoke a line or two. He had another cameo in Michael Cimino's 1979 film "Heaven's Gate". He also co-wrote the music for the films "Stacy's Knights" and "Eddie Macon's Run" with guitarist Mike Hinton.
G'bye, Norton... I miss you already... | | | If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

| Posted: | | | | Sorry to hear this. I agree, the 60s were great. I remember listening to the BBC on Saturday Morning on AM, fade-in, fade-out, signal was too weak in summer, winter was better of course. The show was called "Saturday Club" and presented by Brian Matthew. He is pensioned now (81 years) but still presents a 2/hour show on Saturday Morning, BBC Radio 2. I'm listening right now. The Beatles and lots of others performed live on the show in those days. He just played an oldie by the moptops which was never released.
Signal is great now, of course, with Internet. Try it out, Cliff. My favorite US band was the Steve Miller Band, The Byrds were OK, amazing first album by Moby Grape, Love made a great album. And of course Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and The Allman Brothers Band. Have fun if you care to listen! |

| Posted: | | | | Here's one where he performs Luiz Bonfá's "Manhã de Carnaval" with his wife Lisa Flores at Angelo's restaurant in Chico: Lots of diners' talking and it cuts off too soon, but typical of his versatility. | | | If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

| Posted: | | | | Cliff,
I did not know Norton Buffalo, I only knew OF him, but I enjoyed his music over the years. I share your sense of loss.
He was one of those performers from the 60s who managed to survive that period and live to a ripe old age (though in Norton Buffalo's case it wasn't all that old -- he was younger than I am and I don't like to feel old). I just heard on the radio the other day that Grace Slick turned 70 last week. Who'd have thought THAT possible. | | | Another Ken (not Ken Cole) Badges? We ain't got no badges. | Posted: | | | | I hope these really don't happen in threes... I just read where Shel Dorf (founder of ComicCon) died from kidney failure yesterday... too many buddies from decades ago are passing. Suddenly I feel very very old. I need to read some old Steve Canyon comic strips now. | | | If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

Does Vic Mizzy (composer of "Green Acres" and "The Addams Family" themes) count as one of the three (he died Oct. 17 at 93) or is that too long ago? If you can count him, that makes the three: Vic Mizzy, Norton Buffalo and Shel Dorf. | | | Another Ken (not Ken Cole) Badges? We ain't got no badges. We don't need no badges.
