Just to start with for anyone that saids these films will not look much better on Blu-ray. Pleases kindly go jump off the nearest bridge or do yourself a favour and watch a Blu-ray.

OK, so explain to me how you made this assessment? There are no screencaps on that page you listed, so how do you know what the discs look like?

The General is by Buster Keaton, not Charlie Chaplin.

Same period of film making and all big films of the day.

And those caps of The General look great, but if Kino spent all that money to clean it up, then their SD release will be just the same, and cheaper.

Don't you mean if they don't? I was more posting this as sort of giving an idea as to when these films will be available in the states.

I always buy American when it comes to Blu-ray. Except some stuff from ITV DVD and i have a few earlier releases here which where in slim cases.

Kino is a smart company that is not going to bite the hand that feeds it. Their purchasing base has always been people who know that SD is just fine for films of that time period. I guarantee you, they'll release it on SD.

So what your saying is they will have a multi format release and the SD will look just as good

While it won't look completely pristine, for the bulk of Kino's purchasing base, it will be fine.

I don't think Kino on Video and Kinowelt are the same company, are they?

The Kino disc of The General does look gorgeous, though.  I hope that if Kinowelt releases the Chaplin films on Blu-ray that they're the original theatrical cuts and not Chaplin's recut versions from his dotage (the "Daddy" cuts).

There the German distributor for Kino that's why posted this as it gives indication when they bring these to the states. I imagine in a box set more than anything else as they can maximum profit for all the films then bring them out individually once the market has grown a bit more.

Does Warner still have the US rights, though, to the Chaplin films still under copyright?  I'm rather unclear as to the rights status on these things in the US, and whether Kino would be in a position to release them.  OTOH, if MK2 no longer has the rights in Europe, maybe the deals have all expired.  I would hope the Chaplin family has backed off on their insistence on using the Daddy cuts.

Well if i remember correctly the HD restorations of those Chaplin films where completed in the summer of 09.

I think Kino have rights on the theatrical versions till march so don't know if by theatrical that means the Daddy Cuts or they have the right to distribute the originals.

The best thing i think could happen would be to have all the versions of each film released in one premium boxset. That way the Chaplin family make a nice tidy sum and it satisfies fan demand.

But given if it's true there rights run out in march ether this will be limited release or they will renew them.

But the news about the German release gives hope.
