| Posted: | | | | OK...I just finished the construction of a DVD/CD cabinet that will house over 1000 DVD/CD's in their respective cases. Now I can get these damn things out of the plastic crates from under the bed and display/organize them properly. My question is, with all the many ways to do this, i.e. alphabetically/by genre/by collection #, so on...give me some feedback as to how it seems to work out best. I know that it is probably personal preference, however it seems that there should be some general concensus of the most efficient and manageable way to file the discs. With the number of discs involved, I don't want to do this over and over. Thanks |

| Posted: | | | | Started with sorting by alphabet and soon learned that it comes to a lot of shifting when the shelves fill up and you dare to buy a new DVD starting with an "A". Now I sort by Collection# and new DVDs just get there place at the end. | | | It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up! But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

| Posted: | | | | I have grouped them in some genre blocks and within each block alphabetically.
Since I don't add that many movies to my collection anymore the the re-org effort is acceptable once in a while. | | | Karsten DVD Collectors Online

| Posted: | | | | In genre blocks * Classical Music, by Composer + Title * Music by Artist + Title * Musicals by Composer + Title, * Documentaries etc, by Title, some "special sections" like: Egypt * Norwegian TV-series / Houmor and the three major ones: * Drama++, watched, by title (DVD + BD together) * Drama++, NOT watched, by title (DVD) ( I think I remember a poll earlier, that showed I'm not the only one with "a couple" of entries" here...)* Drama++, NOT watched, by title ( BD ) Some box sets and "special sections" once more, on top of "all" shelves. Like Monty Phyton, Simpsons, James Bond, X-files. The logistics is a hassle I'm often told I could stop buying, and WATCH more... hmmmmm..... | | | Karsten |

Same way, but I don't put them on shelves anymore. | | | Unfortunately, I can't use DVDprofiler at the moment due to lack of a Windows computer. |

| Posted: | | | | In my experience just sorting by collection number works the best. You don't have to re-sort if you buy a new DVD, ...
But your personnel preference influences the decision the most. |

| Posted: | | | | I think its all a matter of what you like it to be.....if the collection is on display and you want it to be easy for a visitor to look through the shelves and find something alphabetical is probably easiest. But, there is a lot of work shifting things around to fit new movies in order. Some people prefer ease over how it looks in the shelf......Have fun sorting it out! |

| Posted: | | | | It all comes down to personal preferences.
I have all my TV series together. All movie boxsets (+ later movies of the series not included in the boxset) and special packaging are together. I have all blu-rays together. All the other movies are alphabetical. About once a month I shift movies to put in the latest purchases.
What type of cabinet did you buy. I would like to add a storage cabinet myself, since spacing is always a big problem. | | | View my collection at http://www.chriskepolis.be/home/dvd.htm

That's almost how I have mine. I used to split out my Blu-ray titles but when I had a few parts of a series on DVD and others on Blu I changed that. Everything is alphabetical except within a series where it's chronological. |

| Posted: | | | | Purely alphabetical for me (1200+). I leave space on the individual shelves so that I have room to move things around when I buy an "A" title... |

| Posted: | | | | For me with almost 2400 cases, of which 200+ are BRD. The BRDs are at the end strictly alphabetical, until it gets to large. The DVDs are separated with dividers, of my design, by the usual genres with a few specialized genres of my own then alphabetical within each genre. My shelving system (homemade) makes it reasonably easy to adjust when adding something at the beginning. | | | Marty - Registered July 10, 2004, User since 2002. |

| Posted: | | | | I mostly store them alphabetically...mostly. TV sets are first, then all movies. Box sets are used to "bookend" each shelf (so the single discs don't fall off!), but are still alphabetical. The exception is the Disney "classics", which are sorted chronologically along the bottom shelf. | | | My phpDVDprofiler collection |

| Posted: | | | | If you order by collection number, be aware that if you remove a profile and then add a profile, it will take the number that was previously assigned to the profile you removed. |

| Posted: | | | | As other have mentioned, I do mine alphabetical and just leave extra space on each shelf to accommodate new purchases. At some point shifting will be required when a shelf fills up, but I usually only have to do it a few times a year. | | | "Rules are for the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise men" - Douglas Bader "A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools." - Douglas Adams |
