Hiya, it has been a while since I have been online. Still collecting, and I am looking into extending my collection with some 'real' classics... though I am actually interessted in the movie I'd rather not purchase "ultimate collector's editions". I am looking for these movies:
  • Sound of Music (have to wait for Christmas 2010)

  • Wizard of Oz

  • West Side Story (not yet available)

  • Casablanca

  • The Parent Trap (1961 - most likely not available)

  • Gone with the Wind

  • Only problem being I am not sure which Blu-ray I can buy at Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com without just buying a Blu-ray, or an equivalent of the "ultimate collector's editions" without the things besides the actual movie.

Can anyone guide me, or am I bound to buy the "ultimate collector's editions"?

And is there anything else I should get?

    Thanks everyone.

    West Side Story: available

The Parent Trap (1961) : available (it's a UK import though, so you might want to check at Amazon.co.uk too)

EDIT: Forget it, just read the titles. Wished MediaType was somewhat hidden.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

Yeah... sorry 'bout that... I am indeed looking for the Blu-ray versions of these titles.
I indeed found most on DVD, but the problem I am 'faced' with is that some movies are available on Blu-ray but don't seem to be of equal quality as their "Ultimate Collector's Editions".

Some Blu-ray's do say 70th or so anniversary, but I am pretty reluctant; reviews aren't always clear about the quality compared to those "Ultimate Collector's Editions".

The discs at least with regards to GWTW and Oz are identical, well almost more on that in a second. For Oz they are the same but do not include the bells and whistles (non-disc material). The bells and whistles don't interest me, if I have a choice. In the case of GWTW, the transfer will be the same BUT instead of including Moviola: The Scarlett O'Hara War, they are including When the Lion Roars, which came with Oz, as well. So in that case I will say I am considering the UCE, I don't need two When the Lion Roars.

As to the transfers themselves, even Casablanca, two words, simply spectacular. The upcoming African Queen which I have been able to pre-screen and can't wait, I'm in love. The film looks better than it has in years and years, we came very close to losing this classic.

I don't have any word on WSS or PT for BD yet. Christmas looks like it's going to pretty packed this year, so I am not sure i am looking for either of them until next year at the earliest.

    Skip thanks!!
So without problem I can order
    Wizard of Oz,
    Casablanca, and
    Gone with the Wind.

I'll have to read up on African Queen. A tad embarrassed I have to say that I haven't ever seen GWtW and Casablanca... and I read in a long article what you state very well in those two words.

    Absolutely you can order those.

The colors of Oz are more vibrant and the details sharper than i have ever seen them . In the case of GWTW you will see and hear a movie which the audiences in 1939 never witnessed...not even in the very best theater in the world. When they did the last restoration it was very interesting, it was discovered that the three technicolor negatives had always been out of registration by FIVE pixels, the computer made the correction resulting a level of detail that is simply incredible, the restoration also uncovered audio information which while it was always there, it was to subtle for the equipment of 1939 to pick up and be able to reproduce, like ructling crenolins in the women's dresses, even some of the moaning in the Atlanta sequence which opened after the intermission. It was just awesome. Casablanca just...WOW.

For the Queen go here it has some screenshots that while they don't do the Full HD justice will still knock your socks off. Especially if you are familiar with some of pathetic airings of the film in the last 20 years, we truly came close to losing it. But no more.

I recently bought The Parent Trap / The Parent Trap 2 at Big Lots for $3. I'm pretty sure I've seen more copies of it the last time I was there. Its in the database: UPC 786936-286960.
