In a couple forums I post in, there are dedicated threads for contests. I did a search but couldn't find one on this forum (although I may have missed it).

I was going to start a thread, but didn't want to only to have it deleted if it's against the rules.

Anything in the rules against this?

"Everything not forbidden is compulsory."

Everything not required is questionable if not forbidden.

I suspect you will need to define competition and contest. Is this a simple question and answer trivia game? or an ad?
If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

The threads I'm talking about usually are just simple "this site is giving away X. Go email them your name" as posts.

Ads. Got it.

To be fair that would then preclude "This site has title X at a bargain rpice" and those are allowed...

The brevity of your reply suggests that you are trying to make a point. Could you elaborate?

Didn't say they weren't allowed. Just stating a fact. Why are we here? To organize our DVD collection. If there is a way to save on DVDs, it seems like a reasonable ad, aimed at an audience who would correspond to the ad's intended target. But send your email to an unknown site to get a free Tshirt so you get your email added to at least one spam list? Not so well aimed.

I offer a fact, and I taint it with my personal opinion. I've owned an advertizing agency for nearly two decades, and worked in advertizing since the mid 1960's. Why hide the fact that you want to give free advertizing to an unrelated company? Does adding your email address come with a guarantee that it will not be sold into other mailing lists? Someone has to pay for the "freebie" don't they? I offer not a rule of this forum, but I ask a simple question: does something have to be illegal in order to make it immoral? Are only proscribed acts wrong?

Each of us can choose to participate in any function of this forum, unless it is forbidden. If you offer me a shirt for my email, is my cost worth how much I might value the shirt? If I do not want the shirt, do I become annoyed that the forum has bandwidth devoted to ads? Or do I accept that many people here want free stuff for getting more spam? I raise discussion, nothing more.
If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

Not quite sure if the you is the general you or directed at me since I started the thread. If it's directed at me, I was just asking to share some contests that I know of. Nothing more.

I think you are looking way too much into it than needs be. There is no conspiracy here, it's just a thread where people can put contest links.

It works very simple in the other forums I'm part of.

Generally one thread devoted to contests. People decide themselves if they want to enter them. If they don't, they don't open the thread. I'm actually a little surprised at your response since I've never seen such a reaction in the numerous forums I've seen these types of threads on.

I have taken part of many online contests such as this. Though I haven't in a while. But even when I did (and yes... I have won several DVDs this way) I always used a certain (free) email that I use for nothing but stuff like this... so the spam was never that big of a deal this way.

I would say, ask yourself: Does it collide with the actual forum rules? If you think it doesn't, why not posting it.

You'll see very fast if it's accepted by the community and Invelos.
