What a conundrum I am in. I hate buying a movie twice! When the DVD of Avatar comes out this month it is suppose to be a bare bones, no special features added. The studio has announced that it will be releasing another copy of the movie loaded with many special features in november. Now, I haven't yet seen Avatar do to the fact that I hate going to movie theaters due to lowd people and most theaters I have been too have a lousy sound system. I also don't like to waist my money on renting a movie either. I guess the question I am hoping to get an answer too is, is it worth buying the DVD when it is released this month with little to know special features, or is there just a lot of hype behind the movie because it is pretty, and would it be best to just wait for the November Special Addition and grab it then?

If you could wait till now, you can wait for the proper release. Don't fall for the marketing scheme!

I agree; you've waited this long and, since the amazing 3D was the big thing that made the cinema trip one worth braving and you won't get that on the present (or the November) release, you might as well wait for the extras packed version.

I think that is where my biggest problem is. If it was only the 3-Dthat made it a such a great movie, then it seems that it would best to just go ahead and grab it when it comes out. Oh the choices that come with having a serious DVD addiction.

In my opinion, 3-D isn't what made it a great movie.  3-D is what made it a must see in theaters.  I would have enjoyed it regardless, the 3-D just made it more enjoyable.

I agree with you.  And, since I love the special features, I'll be waiting until the Nov release to pick this up.  I will, however, drop the $1 to rent it from Red Box in 2 weeks.

If you can wait 30 days to mid  May you'll be able to pick up 'barebones' Avatar -  previously viewed - for maybe around $5.00 ( the rental market will be flooded with these copies.,)  then come November pickup the $30 version  then give the barebones copy to one of your relatives  (xmas) who have a dvd player but never buy DVDs ... Problem solved ..

Can you elaborate on the wrong OAR?  Isn't this 1:85  down to 1:78 for DVD or am I mistaken??

From Wikipedia so may/may not be 100% accurate -

Quote:
Cameron stated that the film's aspect ratio would be 1.78:1 for 3D screenings and that a 2.39:1 image would be extracted for 2-D screenings.  However, a 3D 2.39:1 extract was approved for use with constant-image-height screens (i.e. screens which increase in size to display 2.39:1 films).

I know of no Imax films in 2:39... Even Apollo 13 was downsized to 1:66  (1:78) for Imax ..

Ok, back to OP.

I think I'll buy it on first release on Blu-ray, because I liked the movie very much.

And I won't bet on not buying a second time in a Special Edition.
