In the headshots database thread, users told about their preference, and the quality of images, of "big" images and smaller ones, cropped just around the face.

I give here my opinion, on a technical point of view.

Images cannot, by program, be taller than 300x400 pixels. When you crop it to keep just the face, you get a smaller image. In the comparison window when accepting new images, the smaller one is extended to 300x400, and in fact, looks of a "lesser" quality than the big one.

But in layouts, those images are never displayed in full size. They are shown in actor's credit list, and in cast list. The bigger displayed image is in fact in the credit list, and is 112x150. If you have in your database the original (bigger) image, you get in fact a smaller face than with the cropped image, with no benefit in quality since the image is more reduced.

So, in my point of view, I get the better quality on screen with cropped images, as long as it is not cropped to smaller than 112x150, even if the comparison screen shows the contrary.

Of course, it's just an opinion, not trying to make other users change their mind about their preferences.

My choice depends entirely on the image itself. Most of the time I will take a face only. Quite a few times I prefer a portrait style image (including torso).

Hey there,

I never crop images, I take them how they are to not lose quality and to not destroy the artsy intention the photographer had.
This is probably my main intention to use the original image and not a cropped one, it destroys the work of the photographer
And as said in the general headshot thread, I always go for the better quality image instead of a headshot , which might have less quality.

But as we gladly have no rules on this, everyone should do what they prefer best

In most cases I do exactly the same.

I think it also depends on the sizes that you use in DVDP. I use big pics for the actors and in the actor screen the biggest possible, so I like the headshots in a big resolution.

If I can get a Headshot in a big resolution, most times I prefer this. But resizing I do very less, so it also depends on what pics I can get.

And for women sometimes I loke to see a bit more than just the face. Don't know why, seems to be a personnel preference.

So I think it's depending on many facts.

I have the same personal preference - sometimes I almost forget to include the face

Same here.  For guys I take any photo, but for some actresses, I will scour the web for hours to find the most perfect picture.
