| Posted: | | | | Hi,
I just noticed that Fry's has a $70 BD Combo drive on their website. They're within driving distance so I wouldn't have to pay shipping. I don't currently have any way to view Blu-Ray discs on my computer and am in the process of acquiring parts for a new computer. I have the new MB, CPU, Graphics Adapter and the memory is being shipped. After a bit of playing musical chairs with my other computers I'll have the PS and hard drive. Would it be wise to purchase the Combo drive or just use a spare DVD burner which I have now and wait until Blu-Ray burners become more economical? Cost is a major concern.

| Posted: | | | | For $70 I would pick it up. Unless you regularly need to create Blu-ray video discs, getting a burner seems unecessary; there are better and cheaper ways to back up your data. I have the old LG BD-rom/HD-DVD-rom/DVD writer and I use it almost everyday for something and I paid over $200 for it and still consider it a bargain. I also have a BD-rom/DVD writer in my laptop which is great for watching Blu-rays on the road. At the very least it will let you get the DiscID for contributing all those Blu-ray profiles you are so hard at work on. | | | Last edited: by bob9000 |

| Posted: | | | | I also agree with bob, I bought an LG Black Blu-ray/HD DVD-ROM & 16X DVD±R DVD Burner SATA Model GGC-H20L about 2 years ago, $149.00 from Newegg. I use external drives for backup. In fact two days ago when I turned on my PC and started the profiler I got number of errors. I was glad every day I'm through with the profilers I backup to both the internal and exterrnal drives. Redoing over 13,000 profiles is not an option. | | | We don't need stinkin' IMDB's errors, we make our own. Ineptocracy, You got to love it. | Posted: | | | | Hi,
Thanks for the responses. After I posted I Googled the drive to see if I could get any info. I found the drive at Newegg.com for $70 with free shipping and a promo code for 10% off.
This is the drive: SAMSUNG Black 8X BD-ROM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-ROM SATA Internal Blu-ray Combo Drive - Bulk Model SH-B083L/BSBP LightScribe Support - OEM
I had trouble with the promo code so I emailed them and they said it should be good until the 7th and if I had any problems let them know and they'd refund the $7. I'd gone out for awhile and when I got back I tried again and it went through fine. I read over the customer reviews and the only one that was negative said it wasn't quiet enough.
The memory was in today's mail and Newegg claims speedy delivery of the drive so I'll slap the system together on the benchtop and see what happens. |

| Posted: | | | | Regarding the software:
I read that the drive comes with a version of PowerDVD that supports Blu-Ray. |

I read that the drive comes with a version of PowerDVD that supports Blu-Ray. That's correct for all newer versions of PowerDVD. OEM-versions usually only have Stereo sound enabled though, so you'd probably have to purchase additional sound-output modules. Or you use WMP for BluRay playback, which works quite fine, but doesn't have that much comfort functions as PowerDVD. | | | It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up! But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?
