That certainly sounds like a train wreck.

I mean, I could be wrong ... but given everything he's done up to this point...

He can sing...he did in Sweeney Todd..the one with Johnny Depp.  And that was a different sort of performance than he's done in other stuff.  More restrained.  I have a book about the making of the movie too and it talks about how hard he worked on the sining.  So it seems like he can take things more seriously.  Though the singing in Sweeney Todd is different from what he'd have to do as Freddie Mercury.

Liking or not one of his performance isn't the point...
I like The Private Afternoon of Pamela Mann and it sure doesn't mean that I think Eric Edwards can play Freddie Mercury

This sounds intriguing at worst. I'm pretty sure Cohen can play serious and he has the perfect look for this.
I'm trying to think of anyone else for the role, and coming up empty. Does anyone have any other suggestions for actors other than "not Sasha"?

There are definately some indian or persian actors who are up to the role.
Best would be to take a not famous actors so there is more concentration on the movie

One actor I just got in mind would Kannada actor Prithviraj
