Asda are having a nice in-store sale where you get the LGBD550, The Dark Knight, Sherlock Holmes and Clash of the Titans for £100.

They also have the Phillips 2700 player for £57.00

Enjoy.

And Sam still don't believe Blu-ray is going to take over in 2012

I don't think BR will ever take over (next will be digital downloads... which I won't support!). That's not to say I don't support the format.

Without the PS3 gamers who buy the occasional release, BR would be a lot worse off than it is even now. Not only that but the recession isn't helping either. I would LOVE to be proven wrong and would LOVE to see BR be the dominant format, but I just don't see it happening.

The PS2 helped DVD just as much as the PS3 help Blu-ray. So the same argument could be applied about DVD. The industry won't push downloads until the point it becomes just as consumer friendly as disc based media. And they feel they have gotten the right return on there investment in the format.

With fresh investment now being put into 3D for home use, and Blu-ray being the only feasible way of doing that. I think it's safe to say that Blu-ray has life in it till the end of the decade.

Im glad to here Sam though you recognise now the benefits of the format. From the ignorant mantra that Blu-ray only stands to benefit films of the action variety before

But people didn't need to upgrade their TV for a DVD player. That is a big problem for the HD format in getting general consumers more interested.

btw, I have ALWAYS recognised the benefits and never said it only helps certain genres. I said I would only upgrade certain movies from certain genres because I don't NEED to see certain films in HD.

Depends ... I'm also a PS3 gamer but at the same time movie/TV fan, so I've bought some 500+ Blu-ray discs with my PS3 as main player. Gamers who aren't into movies on the other hand, I can imagine it's only a handful.

Yes, I mean your 'average' gamer who will buy (as sales figures have shown for BR) movies like The Drak Knight and Iron Man 2. The 15-30 male crowd. I wouldn't class someone who uses profiler as a casual movie fan (ie. you)

Wow, no. Not even close. DVD would have had no problem surviving without the PS2. None whatsoever. Blu, on the other hand, very well could have easily failed without the PS3.

Ok Smart guy explain to me how your theory of 15-30 male average gamer demographic being the only ones who chalk up sales for the format. Fit's in with Beauty And The Beast topping the week ended of October 10th chart on 100% Blu-ray sales.

Because Beauty and the Beast was not available as a solo DVD release and all sales counted towards the BR EAN's. Duh.

(and I'm not saying they are the only ones chalking up sales... they are the majority)

Yeah i know i know it wasn't released on a solo DVD all the same though a release got to number 1 on Blu-ray.

And they are not the majority.

In a week where BR still only had 18% market share.

BR camp is finally doing a few things right. Releasing BR a week before DVD, packaging them as combos, giving them the sme price point (or withing a couple of £$) of the DVD but at the end of the day, their market share, after 5 years, is very disappointing. No two ways about it, BR has NOT taken off like they thought it would.

Also, if the average PS3 gamer is not a male aged 15-30, I would like to know what market the PS3 has more.

I was not disputing that most PS3 gamers are 15-30. I was disputing the fact that you claimed the majority of them where the source of most Blu-ray sales.

It is true certain films are sluggish at selling on Blu-ray. But this is not attributed to the 15-30 PS3 demographic. I always expected these films to be stranglers on Blu-ray. Over the next 2 years though as Blu-ray prices fall as the format pushes pass the 20% sales mark.

Prices will drop and as standalone DVD hardware starts as it is now to be phased out. Sales on these films will rapidly pick up and the gap will start to close.

Do you honestly think that DVD hardware will be phased out anytime soon?

The majority of consumers haven't even adopted Blu yet, and they most likely won't. DVD isn't going anywhere anytime soon, and when it does, streaming will be its replacement, not Blu-ray.

I have a Blu-ray player, I support Blu, but I'm realistic. It's definitely not the future. It's bigger than laser disc, smaller than DVD and it will stay that way until streaming goes more mainstream.

This 100% (though admittedly I didn't think it would surpass laserdisc, which I also supported).

There pouring money into home 3D now so it's not going to happen for a long time. I said phasing out stand alone DVD hardware as Blu-ray players are also DVD players .

DVD won't be wiped out as a format it will still be around but by 2012 Blu-ray will be the top disc format in terms of new chart sales.
