Just borrowed this title from my dad, and after 30 minutes I decided to take a look at the overview. It says this is the final of a trilogy, Hero and House of the flying daggers. So since it's a trilogy, should I first see the two other movies, or is this trilogy stand-alone films so it doesn't mind which one to see first?

They are standalone films.  They are a trilogy in a sense that they are all period martial arts movie by the director Yimou Zhang.  You can see them in any order you want.

I remember Curse of the Golden Flower to be colorful.

Which B-rD transfers of Hero and House of Flying Daggers (English titles) are recommendable?

I'd even take a good trilogy box set.

There are no good English friendly release of Hero.  Disney's release here in the US and UK do not include lossless audio for the original Mandarin.  House of Flying Daggers was one of the original Blu-rays released by Sony and widely panned for poor resolution and artifacts.  I'm still waiting for a definitive release from HK or Korea that include original lossless audio and English subs.

Thanks for the informations, Sir. For both movies I'd prioritize a superb image quality over the audio encoding.

What about Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (English title)? I would very much like to, hmm, upgrade that disc too.

I am not aware of any Blu-ray release other than from Sony for CTHD.  They are pretty much the same all over the world.  PQ and AQ of the Sony release is very good.

Oh, I just noticed that I already had the very same thought half a year ago, since then CTHD ascended to No. 59 in my unwatched B-rD waiting line. Good to know that it won't be a disappointment!
