After 1080p and lossless audio, and 3D, we will have to upgrade again, this time to 48 frames per second:

"So we have lived with 24 fps for 9 decades - not because it's the best film speed (it's not by any stretch), but because it was the cheapest speed to achieve basic acceptable results back in 1927 or whenever it was adopted."

"I see it as a way of future-proofing THE HOBBIT. Take it from me - if we do release in 48 fps, those are the cinemas you should watch the movie in. It will look terrific!"

Peter Jackson on Shooting The Hobbit at 48 fps

But, but then the movie will only be half as long.

A point i like to make is Jackson said watching a film in 24fps after seeing 48fps. He got easily distracted. Did he ever think maybe that's why 24fps was left as the standard to ensure that the last 90 odd years of film did not become unwatchable.

Allowing future generations to appreciate what has come before.

Maybe Lucas should reshoot his entire SW's  saga in 48fps  and then again there would yet another verison to eventually buy.....

Quiet! Don't give him any ideas!  Hopefully, he's forgotten to redo these in 3-D!

From Wikipedia:

3-D edition

At a ShoWest convention in 2005, George Lucas demonstrated new technology and stated that he was planning to release all six films in a new 3-D film format, beginning with either A New Hope or The Phantom Menace in 2007. In January 2007, StarWars.com's Questions & Answers section stated that Lucasfilm was busy with other upcoming media such as the Star Wars live-action TV series, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and media related to the 30th anniversary of Star Wars.[4] In September 2010, it was announced that the Star Wars films will be released in 3-D beginning in 2012 with the release of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.

He hasn't forgotten.  According to StarWars.com,  the 3D theatrical release of Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace will be February 10, 2012.

Prime Focus has been chosen to do the conversion.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

Did nobody learn that 'video-ising' the look of film (which is essentially what shooting at 48 fps will do) looked awful when they tried it before and I doubt things have changed

I was thinking the same thing. 48fps is great for video games but I heard it's not suitable for films.

So whom to trust, Sir Peter Jackson, who had pushed the bounds with his mega-project The Lord of Rings trilogy, using most advanced technology, 20 Oscar wins, Weta Digital & Workshop at his side, currently shooting The Hobbit(s) in 3D?

Or Voltaire53, forum member?

I'm on the fence.

I'm guessing "good" is in the eye of the beholder.  With modern audiences almost expecting that somewhat plastic sheen that HD tends to give things, 48 fps might be right up their alley.

I remember too, how terrible 3D used to be,  until they got it right..  and this 48 FPS is to going to make 3d even more believable....
