| | Posted: | | | | I have a ton of DVD's that hae UPC codes that are 13 characters long with 9 in the first digit. DVD proflier is unable to recognize any of these UPC codes. All others with 0, 5, 6, 7, or 8 in the first digit for the most part were founf properly ...
Any suggestions?

Those are "Bookland"-Numbers, ISBNs "disguised" as EANs. Are there no other UPCs/EANs on the Backcover? If not, you could try a search for the Disc-ID bei inserting the DVD into you computer. Or if all other fails .... However, that does not make them invalid for DVDs. The problem is that the others are also correct in another regard. The DVD Profiler database is built by its own users. So every profile you do find in there is there because another user of this site put it there. So if you don't find one with your UPC, you will have to do the work yourself. I checked the first three of your UPCs with Google and they all seem to be concert DVDs which would also explain why not too many people will own them. Nothing against these people but such DVDs are "special interest" and aren't collected by that many people and hence it's understandable why there isn't a profile for them. But it also means that building a profile is not that complicated since there aren't any huge cast and crew lists to enter. Just add the UPC and when it asks you to enter a title because it didn't find one, enter it and you'll be fine. I found a few ways to do this, but in the end it was fastest for the 400+ that I had to just either cut & paste or type in the beginin of the name ... almost all have a profile of some sort. It appears that "standards" is a loose term when it comes to cataloging programs ... there seems to be no easy way to convert between DVDP, Collectorz, DVDPedia, Readerware, etc. -- unfortunately all of these at any given time have featrue advantages over the others ... hopefully one day there wil be that "perfect" one  MAC and iOS support/syncing, plug-in support, online/user submitted database, auto cataloging to name a few ... cheers! |

Though...
All the Australian releases I own start with 9.
Warner Home Video in the UK generally start with 7.
A lot of Buena Vista titles in UK start with 8.
Do different countries have different UPC 'rules'? Doh. I see you mean 978 and not 9 or 7 or 8.  Thanks for that link Tom. |
