Steve Stills liked the Mojo's Men's cover of "Sit Down, I Think I Love You" at least as well as Buffalo Springfield's original. Mel Torme refused to record his "Christmas Song" because Nat King Cole's was too good.
"Lullaby of Birdland" has been covered very well by hundreds of fine artists; it is a standard. But without George Shearing's original, none would exist and would have nothing to measure against.
Like I wrote above, Brian Jones liked the Animals version of "Paint It Black" as well as his own.
